Found a pair of Jensen C-12-R'S at auction, they were bolted together face to face.Upon getting them home Iwas surprised to find they have a second cone coming out from around the dust cap, like a horn. Are these old hi-fi speakers, and are they any good for a guitar amp? They date 23rd week of 64. code on black basket is c-12-r c7645-2. code on large paper cone is 3012Y06W18. Any info is appreciated.-Thanks -Mike.

The second cone is called a "whizzer cone". Its purpose is to add treble, to turn a woofer into a full-range speaker. They were pretty common in the early days of hifi, but they aren't very accurate so as hifi got more sophisticated they fell out of favor.
I've heard about people cutting off whizzer cones to tame high frequencies. If you didn't pay a lot for them you might try removing one whizzer and see if that makes it better for guitar use.

It is highly likely that you will blow hifi speakers if you use them with a guitar amp. They are too sensitive and do not have the inbuilt damping of a guitar speaker which overcomes large cone excursions, so if you crank them, they'll eventually fry.

I've carefully cut off whizzer cones with good results.

Thanks for all that info. Only paid $15 for the pair. I'll try carefully cutting off the cone on one. It sounded fine except for some nasty bass buzz when I cranked the amp. Then again the speaker was not mounted, just laying on the back of the cab. I'll give it another shot. Not a lot to lose.-Thanks again-Mike

That would significantly affect the speaker's sound, in a bad way. I'd try mounting one in a cab first. You can easily cut off the whizzer later, but it's harder to stitch it back on. ;)

I have some of these speakers and they are lighter duty speakers. Good speakers but light duty.
I have a '64 C12P in my Deluxe Reverb and it sounds great. I also have an old brown frame alnico Jensen from 1959 that I am going to get reconed. I think it's a P12P but I've never seen a dark brown frame like this one. This one also has the whizzer cone but I'll get it reconed without the extra cone thing.
