Hi Everyone,

I have a 73' Strat with correct dates and markings, but it seems to have come with a black pickguard, trem cover, trem tip and knobs. I've read that black pickguards were first used in 73' but only on Mocca brown guitars. Is it possible Fender would have put the black parts on a white guitar as a one off or variation? The parts sure seem and look original to the guitar.
Thanks for any information!

Those parts are quickly and easily swapped out. Someone most likely preferred the look of the black parts and stuck 'em on.

And depending on condition etc. the plastic parts can be almost as old - say somebody swapped the pickguard in the 80s. It's still pushing 30 year old plastic at that point, more if it was NOS at the back of a shop, which a lot of music parts were at the time.

It's hard to imagine such a simpler time, but I remember back when black pickguards were exotic and novel. The first one I saw in a shop was a natural '75 with white knobs and pickup covers and I fell in love. It was love at first sight and I had to have it. I had recently sold my LP Deluxe and used that money to buy the tuxedo Strat. After a while I noticed a lot of flaws and deficiencies but I still think it was a great looking guitar.

Sorry, I have no idea whether black could be original on a '73. I don't remember it being offered on Mocha back then, but that color always made me shut my eyes in horror so I didn't pay much attention to the pickguards.

But there was an explosion of aftermarket parts in the mid/late '70s, because lots of people wanted something other than the same old same old. So like the Rev said, the plastic could have been swapped out way back then.

If so, be glad the modder stopped there. I did brass parts, Schaller tuners, Duncan and DiMarzio pickups to mine.
