I never heard pickups quack as nice as the Big Dippers in the John Mayer strat I used to have .
Unfortunatly Fender doesn't sell them as an aftermarket thing .

Lower powered pickups with Alnico III or V magnets, and setup is critical IMO. I get the best quack results with a middle pup lower than the neck/bridge pups.

IMO it helps, in general, if the pups are similar in spec. IOW two identical pups will tend to quack better than two different ones.
Interesting that the first two pups mentioned are very different, if not opposite, in EQ spec. Dippers are very scooped and TS's are supposed to have a beefed up midrange.
Anyone have an opinion on how the EQ spec of a pup affects quack?
I tend to think scooped pups quack well. But then Knopfler is the King of Quack, and he uses TS's in his signature model. Maybe the way a pup is EQ'd doesn't have much to do with quack, anyway.

One problem here is that there really is different types of quack. I mean, Ive heard some #2 positions(bridge and mid) that are super nasally and airy quacky - and Ive heard others that are fuller but clucky - it really depends. Ive heard unbelievable quack from strats with a 7k bridge and 6k middle. Then Ive heard amazing vintage quack on old instruments with similar output pickups(FYI very rarely have I seen vintage strats with identical ohms per pickup - most are for example, 5.75 n, 5.88 mid, 5.6k bridge)
So yea - theres good quack in many forms. The cs69s are good, the cs60s are good and a little different sounding in their quack... the Special H/SRV Callaham set of Fralins has a hot bridge if Im not mistaken, and they seriously quack...

People may scoff but Guitar Fetish reverse Jimi set is the most quack I've every heard. Didn't work as great with dirt pedals but straight in they made my Roadworn 50s strat sound great.

One problem here is each person's perception of what "quack" is.
Recently somebody posted that they had just wired their strat for all three pups in parallel(not uncommon) and that he was amazed at the enormous quack it gave.
Now I've done that mod often (only ever use neck and bridge) and would acknowledge that 3 in parallel does have a different sound but not my idea of "quack".

quack, quack, quack , quack , quack :)
PapaDave - from what I have heard in the past, vintage style pickups (ie not hot) gives a better quack, but the real trick is in how to setup your pickups to achieve this. The best way is to start with setting up the bridge and neck to your taste , then adjust the middle pickup to get the most quack out of position 2 & 4.
