I'm getting to less like the Hot Noiseless, which I've had since 2005 on my '04 MIA Strat. The HN sounds compressed and its high-ends are brittle.
How do DiMarzio Area pickups compare to the Hot Noiseless? I'm looking for more Stratty stacked pickups.
PS. I love CS '50's pickups on my '12 Strat but I need one Strat w/ noiseless pickups.

I'm the same as you. I'm getting tired of the HN's I put in my MIM standard. I've been thinking about DM Areas too, but I've never played them. As I mentioned in another thread, I really like the Injectors I've heard. But for my main Strat, I think I want something more vintagey, less hot.

I guess I'll just order an Area pickup set from MF. I can always return.

I've had all the Fender noiseless pups with the exception of the N3's, and my Area 58's and Virtual Solo are head and shoulders above all them sound wise! You won't be disappointed!

I need to decide what to order.
I might go with the following config:
Area 58 - Neck
Area 67 - Middle (maybe Area 58 again?)
Area 61 - bridge

I have tried most of the noiseless out there and I prefer the areas to them all (even Kinman). I think you are on the right track with 58,67,61. Go for it and let us know what you think.

Something to think about.........
Order another pickguard, pots, switch etc. at the same time.
DM recommends using higher value pots with their pups like the Areas. The 500K or 1 Meg values they recommend are different from the stock 250K Fender. This way if you ever decide you want to swap pups it's much easier. You can swap out the entire pickguard with no soldering. Use a couple of wire nuts inside, one for the grounds and one for the output.
If you look around you may be able to pick up a pickguard for less that $10 (Craigslist, etc.).
BTW, I have a set of 58-58-61 in a Clapton Strat. Keep in mind that it is VERY difficult to compare pups, a lot of times because they are in different guitars. That said, they don't have exactly the "something" that regular single coils have when compared side by side, but once again, my comparison was done with the SCs installed in another guitar. But do they sound bad? Not at all. For another reference, go to youtube and do some searches, especially the one with Guitar World on the Areas.
One more thing: For about a week I had a combo of 58-Lace Gold-61 in the Clapton. The Areas were MUCH quieter than the Lace.

I used Lace Golds for 2 decades and found them much quieter than any single coil. When I installed my DiMarzio Areas I was pleasantly surprised to hear they had zero noise, unlike the Lace which are noise reduced!

Hey mystique1, I'm teetering between trying Lace Golds and Areas. I'd love to hear a little more about how you compare the two. I'm guessing the Lace are more compressed, less vintage-sounding. Would you still recommend the Lace Golds, or are you totally sold on the Areas?

"DM recommends using higher value pots with their pups like the Areas. The 500K or 1 Meg values they recommend are different from the stock 250K Fender." ???
From the installation instructions that come with the Area's:
"Component Values- All models were designed to work with 250K controls. For a brighter overall sound, try 500K controls (EP1201).
For even more highs and overall ‘cut’, try a 500K volume with a 1
Meg tone pot."
I have always installed with standard 250K pots and have never had an issue. YMMV.

I used Lace Golds in my Strat Plus for 20 years and loved the sound of 'em. In '09 I bought a new Am Std Strat and although I liked the stock pups, I didn't like going back to a guitar that hummed. After trying Fender VN's, SCN's, HN's, Lace Gold, Hot Gold, Silver, SD Everything Axe, nothing sounded as good as my old Plus, until I tried the Areas. Totally Noiseless, more Strat sounding than the old Lace Golds, more highs, and very touch sensitive. Best way I could describe them is, a slightly thicker sounding Alnico V single coil with no hum. The Lace Golds are an altogether rounder sounding more compressed pup, which is something I always loved, but the Area 58's, and Virtual Solo I have in the bridge position, have been a revelation to me. DiMarzios where I live anyway, are quite expensive, but well worth every penny, and my search for pups is thankfully over!!

Thanks, Mystique. Confirms what I figured. I think I'm going to try the Areas, but the Golds/Hot Golds are still calling to me. They seem to have a unique voice that is very appealing, especially for higher gain.

Hi Chris K,
I have a set of HN in my 2003 American Series Strat (thanks to sound samples made by GoranS (I think) on this Forum) and have/had a set of Area's (61, 58, 58)in a 2004 American Series Strat (after seeing the Guitar World review on YouTube).
Love both sets. However, I prefer the extra "grunt" of the HN in the bridge position and therefore bought a HN bridge pup for the Area Strat.
The Area's are more "chimey" to my ear, but are silent. I found that the bridge HN in one of my strats needed to be potted because of microphonics; now it's fine.
Both are fine pickups, but for my role in a rock/prog rock covers band I prefer the HN's.
HTH.

My latest experience is, that it also depends quite a bit on the amp.
I have no Areas (yet you all made me want a set for a test drive, thanks ;)), but I have a Strat with HNs and another with real singles (CS Texas Specials).
Played through my Fender amp, I always wanted the HNs to be a bit more chimey - something the TS delivered easily.
Played through my Marshall amp, the HNs deliver exactly the Strat sound I was looking for, while the TS are somewhat too much.
