I have a 2000 CAR Texas Special/rosewood and a 2012 Clapton Blackie. I'm trying to decide between a 57 or 62 AVR. Current color choices limit me to a two-tone burst 57 or 62 or an Oly White 62. Other than the maple/rosewood and the V neck/C neck, they're pretty much the same guitar, right?

If it matters to you, the 57 has a single ply 8 screw pickguard which can warp up off the body in various places; the 62 has a 3 ply, 11-screw guard. To me, the soft V maple neck of the 57 makes it the winner, regardless of other differences. I believe that the pickups are the same 57-62's; anyone?

Pretty much when the chips are down, I'd get the '62 because I'm not a maple guy (but don't like Oly White either...but that's what my Strat is, go figure).

I don't care much for Oly White in poly, but nitro turns a neat shade of yellow as it ages. Interestingly, the powder blue Duo-Sonic I had years ago also took on some yellowing.

I have both and while they share the same body and pup's they play and sound differently. The different necks do affect the sound with the maple being a bit brighter and bell like. I like both but probably lean towards the 62 which is 3 tone sunburst and my favorite finish.

Do you like chunkier necks? Check out the 62 Hotrod.

The pickguard on my 57 is slightly warped, but it hasn't affected the tone as far as I can tell..LOL

The pickguard on my Blackie Strat, also a single ply, is warped so bad the neck pup is elevated about 1/4"! But, I bought a .014" 7075 bare aluminum shield like the 57 Strats used to be shipped with. I'll be gluing the pickguard to the aluminum and it should take care of the warping as well as blocking RF frequencies as a bonus!
