If I need them, I use the silicone cheapies. I used to use Silly Putty. It worked great.

I had ear plugs with music filters fitted by an audiologist about 2 years ago and use them all the time.

They help a lot. I haven't been getting tinnitis flare ups since I started using them and I can hear things better than when using OTC ear plugs.

My only complaint is that they do darken the sound some.

These are what I use. Cheap, effective, fairly frequency neutral.

I have a 50% hearing loss, in the upper register. Midrange and lows are fine. EN&T Doc says that it could be the result of lots of other stuff besides playing music. Anyway, I wear hearing aids most of the time, but not when I play. Despite the audiologist adjusting these things several times, they accent every litle squeak and string rattle to the point of distraction.
I also had custom ear plugs made and will use them any time that I'm running through an amp. EN&T guy says I may not need them 'cause the highs are already attenuated, but I don't want to get worse.

I use some type of little foam plugs that my audiologits gave me. They are actually used for hearing tests. They are standard foam earplugs but they have a little black, plastic tube through the foam. That is where they connect the hearing test equipment. I just clip off some of the little black plastic tube. This gives me some protection and also lets me hear enough sound to do ok.

I use Hearos that are just like the ones Ace posted. They work great and really preserve most of the sound but just bring the volume down. I use them religiously for playing and listening to live music.

If you are playing or listening to music and it is too loud to have a normal conversation, you should use ear plugs.

To each his own, but I think allowing your hearing to deteriorate and risking getting tinnitus becasue you don't want to wear ear plugs is absolutely insane.

I've been wearing custom fitted ear plugs from an audiologist for 20 years now. They have removable filters of differing attentuation levels. I usually use the 15 dB attenuation level.

These plugs were a bit expensive. But after standing for year's next to a drummer with LOUD cymbal crashes, they may have been my best equipment purchase ever.

I've been using the Etymotic plugs, the kind you have to have molded to your individual ear channels via an audiologist, for several years. When I first used them I was disappointed because of the muffling loss of hearing, and would end up taking them out during a gig. Over time, though I learned that my brain would adapt to the sound restriction, much like my sight adapts to glasses. I play bass on one end of the stage next to the drummer, so whichever ear is facing offstage gets a 25 dB plug and the one facing the drummer and the amps gets a solid plug, due to our excessive (IMHO) volume. I get razzed by the leader of the group who inexplicably takes my using earplugs as an insult to the band, but having already secured myself a degree of tinnitus, I am impervious to his criticism. When tinnitus comes knocking on his eardrums I think he may finally see the light. I urge all bnad newbies to use earplugs from Day One.

Westones, custom fit. They're good when I use them, and handy for concerts as well. I have 9, 15, and 25 dB inserts.

Decidedly not cheap, though.

I use the ones Ace linked for playing and the higher db rated foam ones if I'm working or watching a show that overwhelms the Hearos.

Remember kiddies, once you've got the tinnitus it's too late.

I've been using the custom fitted Etymotic ear plugs with 15DB plugs and they are awesome! After about 10 minutes of wearing them you don't really notice them at all and you can still hear all the frequencies of all the other instruments - but not at excessively loud volumes anymore. I also have tinnitus in my left ear (from scarring on my ear drum from too many ear infections as a kid) and it doesn't get activated at all when I wear my hearing protection, which I wear at all rehearsals and gigs and when going to concerts or checking out other bands. I believe they cost me around $175. The cheap over the counter plugs suck cuz they cut out lots of frequencies and always sound totally muffled.

cisco - Those are the same plugs I am using.

Do you ever have issues with the filters falling out? I've had this happen more than once at gigs when taking the plugs out of my ears. Luckily, I haven't lost any of the filters yet.

I learned to take them out by always putting a finger over the plug to hold it in place and then gently pry out the whole unit. A couple years ago I did have one pop out during a live concert (while I was sitting in the audience) when I took it out to see how loud the music was. The room was completely dark and it was rows of elevated indoor seating. I had to wait till the event was over and the lights came on and after most people left our row I crawled around under the seats and actually found it. The plug was tan colored which was the same as the floor paint and luckily the plug didn't roll down to another level. Since then I'm very careful how I take out my ear plugs. I also have a spare set of 25DB plugs which I have not ever used. A replacement set of just the little insert plug is $80.

Thanks.

I actually super glued one of the filters into the plug because of this issue (I just used a very small amount of glue).

I also use Hearos like the Etymotics Ace posted. I don't go to any live music without them along. If they aren't enough, I leave.

I use the Hearos, practice and gigs. A drummer soLd me on them after he said that he chose them over his custom molded expensive ones. You can hear quite well with them.
