Okay, I've been musing for several weeks about getting some powered monitors so I can ditch hauling around my heavy QSC 2450RMX. Great Amp but I really want to clean the stage up and haul less. And now, my budget is a bit tight to buy something like QSC powered speakers. So I have been looking at the following brands. I know these are bargain price and you get what you pay for. But, has anyone had experience with either Pyle Pro's or Harbingers? Speficially the Pyle Pro PPH120A and the Harbinger APs15? I have read all the reviews and it's like 2 good, one bad ratio for both of these. Some people rave about how good they sound and then there's the guy that says they sound like a bumble bee in a popcan! And obviously, reviews are subjective.I have looked at Behringer's too but like many, kinda have "Behringer aversion" regarding any amps they make. Their outboard gear and mixers seem fine.
I will say this about Pyle- those were the first powered speakers I ever used as a PA. A buddy "loaned" them to me for about 6 months and we used them as our mains for hte FOH. These were pretty road worn and beat up looking, but they sounded awesome and led me to my purchase of the Mackie TH15A's and and a JBL EON powered sub.
Tony, anyone else know anything about the Pyle's or Harbingers?? I would like to do something in July regarding our monitor situation. As usual, thanks and looking forward to your thoughts and suggestions!

I have two harbingers and LOVE them. My drummer also has two and we've never had issues w/ the 15" version through 50 or so gigs and hundreds of practices. Stay away from the 12's though, we had two and both of them fried. You'll have to EQ them (I usually put a bit of a mid hump and lower the lows quite a bit) to make them sound good, but I once you do I think they sound GREAT!

sorry- we just bought Yamaha MSR-100s and LOVE them, but they're $299 apiece.
Did you look at the Kustom's KPC10MP or KPC12MP,
their price was in the 159-179 range?
They got pretty good reviews, BUT ALSO with some
you-get-what-you-pay-for comments.
I use the unpowered KPC10M versions for practice,
(folk rock, electric drums), and they do the
job, and have a decent, though not spectacular
sound quality.

Lemme git dis right...
You have two Mackie TH15A and you apparently like them? So, whassa matter wit da Mackie TH12A?
Budget?
Well, several months ago, Greg (FDPer from Highland CA) mentioned his band used some Podium Pro powered speakers...or so I recall.
I seriously considered some of the Podium Pro speakers, but eventually I bought something different. (From either GC or MF because I needed the plastic to buy the cabinets.)
Recently I purchased a pair of the TH12A and more recently, I purchased a pair of JBL EON315. Tonight (6-30-12) was the first night that the entire "B System" went out. Backyard party for around 80. (Did I mention it was 100 degrees today? Again?)
The "B SYSTEM" I use currently is a Mackie ProFX12 unpowered mixer with a pair of EON 315 mains and a pair of TH12A for monitors. Monitors were plenty loud as were the mains more than adequate for the size of the venue and size of the audience.
I was very pleased with my investment.
As for Harbinger and Pyle Pro...never heard them live. So, I have no reference point.
If I could afford two wedges from Harbinger, I would get two of the TH12A and fork over two of the "July 4th 15% discount sale" coupons.
That's all I got.

I have one of the Kustom's wborys mentioned and like those quite a bit too, not nearly as much gain as the harbingers, but good nonetheless for about $50-75 cheaper.

Thanks Ace and Tony. I hadn't looked hard for the THA12's...that's a good idea! And Ace, glad to hear the Harbinger's are working well for you guys. This gives me a couple of good avenues to pursue! Thank you gentleman!

I have a Beringher Eurolive and love it. In small venues I run my mike into it then to the mixer for just my personal vocal, no problem hearing everyone else. Larger I run off one the mixer buses to the monitor setting each level where I want it. Love having my own eq and volume control on my monitor right in front of me.

Well, I'm probably gonna get ripped on here, but I did spring for some powered speakers to use as monitors. I didn't have a big budget for this so I did a lot of research on the lower end priced units. I picked a pair of Seismic Audio powered 12" speakers. Main reason is every review everywhere I read raved about their customer service. Much more than Behringer or even Mackie's. And, these actually have a Speakon Out so it can actually power an external passive monitor. Which I may have one of them do. When I receive them, I will report back how they work and sound! So now, we have ditched all the external PA monitor amps! Yeaahh! Less to haul! and I trust XLR cables way more than speaker cables. Less noise and hum issues (never have any with my Active FOH system). These actually have gotten good reviews for the durability and sound as well. I was considering the Podium and the Harbinger in that price range too but the Seismic Audio price, reviews, and customer service seemed too decent to pass up.

I have one of these that I use at home to set up and for practicewith my HD500. I think it sounds pretty good. My only concern if were to use it for gigging is the location of the knobs on the bak of the speaker. They are kind of exposed and could get damaged or broken off fairly easy. I hope these work for you.

I have read that about the knobs...I know the ones on my powered Mackie TH-15's are recessed. Knowing this up front, I will just be careful how I load them. I may switch out where I load the Mackies with these in my SUV. Glad you like yours and thank you very much for the input!

Well the Seismic Audio's were used last Saturday night and our lead singer said "they about tore her head off" volume wise! So obviously, I backed them down quite a bit! Good thing we were outdoors so no feedback issues. All in all, they sound great! I used one for myself. So, as long as I am careful about the protruding control knobs on the back, I think these guys will do the trick on the cheap! I will keep you updated of any issues I have in case any of you are considering them!

I recall reading a post by someone who took a piece of "L" aluminum "angle iron" (should it be angle aluminimum?) and made a "protector" or "shield" to protect his exposed controls.
Glad you like the speakers you bought.

I have come up with a way to load and place them that keeps the knobs pretty well protected. We used them again this past Friday and Saturday night and they sounded really good again! I hear plenty of my low keys in these 12" speakers!

These Seismic Audios speakers are rated at 500 watts...I think at least 100+ for monitors would be what anyone would want.

For small club mains or monitors, I think the Mackie TH-12A are adequate. Rated at 200 Watts Program and 400 Watts Peak...meaning "normal level" is around 200 Watts...NOT 400...at least NOT if you want to keep from blowing those speakers and or amp.
For my sound for hire, I run JBL PRX-612M monitors with two 500 Watt power amps. That is the Program rating BUT I do not believe the 500 Watt amp for the horn actually delivers 500 Watts. I strongly suspect it has a limiter and the 500 Watt rating is probably for 8 Ohms but the horn driver is perhaps 16 Ohms, thus drawing less power...so 150-200 Watts to the horn and 500 Watts to the woofer is probably closer to truth.
Back to the Mackie TH12A...
I used those recently at a "society" back yard party with around 80-100 people. The 7 blue grass/soft rock/country/anything goes assorted musicians were in a line with a pair of TH12A for monitors about 20ft apart. That was all the monitors, no drum wedge. Drummer had NO problems hearing the vocals and acoustic instruments in the monitor mix...several of the musicians were VERY impressed with those small and light weight cabinets.
Mains were JBL EON315 active rated around 280 Watts Program. Easily carried venue (yard).
==============
In all honesty....it is a numbers game. You don't really know what rating (RMS/Continuous or Program or Peak) manufacturer's actually use...nor do you know the Ohm rating to achieve that power output compared to the actual Ohm rating of the speakers in the cabinet...
PLUS, the efficiencey (usually shown on quality passive speakers as "Sensitivity; measured at 1 Watt at a distance of 1 meter...and the results are shown in Decibels.
There is a WORLD of difference between 90 dB and 99 dB. PLEASE NOTE: I did not say "Maximum SPL measured in dB" I said "Sensitivity". Try to find 97 dB or higher to get more output of sound for the input of dollars.
===============
All that said, I go for what I hear with my ears and what will satisfy clients who think brand X is junk and brand Z is great stuff. Thus, 3 Mackie and 10 JBL are my current inventory.

Love my Mackie TH-15's for mains. Honestly, I was really price shopping since I didn't have a big budget. I got the SA's for about $100 less than the TH12A's...I assume they would be as good as my TH15A's...so far the Seismic Audios seem to work well for monitor duty.

I recently picked up a Behringer B212D, and my drummer absolutely loves it. 280 rms watts, 12" + horn, VERY compact and lightweight...$220. Heckuva deal.
