There is a surprising dearth of information out there regarding the miking, guitars, amps, etc. on his albums/singles. I've seen him with a Flying V, SG, the Danelectro that's impossible to find, strats, and some weird red one.
He has like a million records too, which doesn't help
I'm surprised no one has made a tribute album, imagine how Hang On would benefit from a click track, proper intonation, and modern production

Link was constantly messing with and changing the guitars and amps he used, often trying to get a sound he and Brother Vernon discovered accidentally at the gig where they made up "Rumble", where--as the story goes--Vernon took the vocal mic attached to a low-wattage tube PA and put in in front of Link's amp. The huge distorted sound that came forth made an impression on nearly everybody who heard it, legend has it.
Link henforth would always try and mix and match amps and PA's--just for his GUITAR rig--trying to capture that same sound. He had a fondness for amps (and guitars, and clothing!) that came out of the Sears and Montgomery Ward catalogs, so plently of Silvertone and Airline amps dominated the backline. He also liked Magnatones, Premiers, Supros, even Gibson amps, although none lasted very long. By the late 70's he'd become fond of using 100-watt Marshalls, and that's pretty much what he used to the very end.
As for guitars, again, the man loved to try new stuff; Started with a Supro Dual Tone, got a Danelectro Guitarlin, A Gibson Firebird, and a mess of different Yamahas, (and later a Gibson SG and Aluminum Strat) and plenty of others in between all this stuff! The "weird red one" you talk about was/is a '66 Yamaha SG-2.
Part of the reason a lot on info about What gear Link played on any one thing goes to the fact that Link mostly recorded in his home studio, the Legendary "Three-Track Shack" made out of an old chicken coup, so the only guy that knew for sure was the man himself, and sometimes he both forgot and was prone to exaggeration. (I will say this: When Link is using his Firebird on a song, you can tell!).
As for a Tribute album, look up "Guitar Ace" on Musick Records

Link Wray used a Les Paul on the Rumble record and then he switched to the white Supro Dual Tone which was listed for sale on ebay recently.

My Rhino Records 'The Best of Link Wray' compilation has the following rundown:
1953 Gibson Les Paul with Premier amp for 'Rumble';
Danelectro Longhorn for "Raw-Hide," "Ramble," "Jack the Ripper"; "Big City After Dark"...that era though.....
Gibson Firebird for "I'm Branded" and others.

And Link sounded like Link Wray no matter what the gear was. Makes me think there's something to that "tone and fingers" thing. ;^/

Opened for him in Tampa circa 2002 or so and it was Strat through a 100W rented backline Marshall - turned to face the back of the stage, and everything was dimed - balls to the wall!

And, yet, he has not been inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame. Go figure.

The times I saw him in the 2000s he used black Strats into Marshall half stacks. Except once at BB Kings in NYC - there was a rented Twin on stage that Link was definitely not happy with.
