I suspect a lot of us whose families have been here from the early times did. My family was never big in the military but I had ancestors on my dad's side fighting in the Revolutionary war on our side but with our Brit family history, I wouldn't be surprised to learn there were others on the Brit side.

It does make a kind of sense. As I understand it the English speaking population of Canada TRIPLED in the first couple of years following the Revolution. The ones with enough cash to pull it off made for Blighty. Anyone else headed for Canada or the British West Indies. Part of the treaty was the solemn promise to respect the Tories rights. That lasted right up to the point the last English soldier left the U.S. Then it was all bets are off! Gee, you'd almost get the feeling that hostilities make you Hostile.

My great great great great grandfather was a sergeant in the Continental Line and died at Valley Forge of typhus in March 1778.
One collateral branch of the family were Loyalists and left frontier NH for Canada eventually settling in Nova Scotia.
And another branch produced a Major General in the Continental Army.

No idea if any of my ancestors were involved in or even here for the Revolution. The oldest known ancestor on my dad's side is a War of 1812 veteran who received a land grant in Illinois for his service. My mom's side of the family was still in Ireland at the time.

Going six generations back on my Mother's side ... Ebenezer Foote was a soldier for the American Revolutionary Forces in that war.
He died in the war.
Keep in mind when thinking of this stuff, much like the Civil War, Many more folks died of health issues such as dysentery as did from injuries from battle.

Since we've been here (virtually all ancestors from both sides) since pre-1650, I probably do too, but every line I have documented (most of 'em) stayed Stateside. Crapload of them in the militias and Continental Army, including my direct surname ancestor, who was an exact contemporary of George W, fought in the same wars (Captain in the CA), and later went on to be one of the top three hotheads in Shays's Rebellion (get yer militia creds here).
The only Canucks I know of were French, and I don't know that they participated (last of them crossed the border southbound in the mid 1800s).

My Mother's side of the family dates back to the French colonies. So I may have had ancestors who fought in the French and Indian War...but on the other side.
