I watched one of those octagon cage fights (actually about 6) with my son-in-law tonight - kicking, punching, wrestling wrapped up into one martial arts sport. My daughter says the young guys are really into this sport and could care less about boxing.
Which reminded me, I have no idea who the current heavyweight boxing champion is, and am not interested enough to google to find out -- and I google a lot of things.
So, is boxing dead?

There's too much hugging in boxing. People just don't like each other that much anymore.

MMA has taken a bite out of the ear of boxing.
I don't care for either.

"So, is boxing dead?"
Yes. Why watch boxing when you can watch a sport that involves boxing and a lot more all rolled into one sport. MMA is a lot faster paced too.

It's not dead in the United Kingdom. Heck, it is so popular there that on the day after Christmas, they go outdoors and box each other.
It's true.

Around the 'Rest Of' the world it's as big or bigger than ever. In North America (U.S. & Can.) it's always been a bit of a niche sport. With pretty rabid fans on the one hand and totally invisible to everyone else. Except when the (very) occasional 'STAR' appears. Then everybody is a fan. Until the new wears off or the next scandal tarnishes the rep. Then it's back to the niche fans.
Think of it as Golf or Tennis.
But with spit buckets and End-Swell.

MMA provides knockouts consistently and boxing doesn't. That's the reason the average consumer watches. It's the "I don't really like racing but I still watch NASCAR for the crashes" mindset.
It also strikes me as far less corrupt than boxing.

I'm the same. I used to watch boxing all the time, but after watching MMA, boxing bores the crap out of me.

I think boxing lasted as long as it did because the gambling industry kept it on life support for the revenue it produced.
Now the NBA does the same job even better, so they pulled the plug on boxing.

I'd argue that MMA requires more skill. Not only do you have to defend against punches like a boxer, but also kicks like a kickboxer, takedowns like a wrestler or judo practitioner, and submission attempts like a jiu jitsu expert.
its why I don't like boxing anymore. I see too many opportunities for a guy to throw a knee, or take a guy down, etc., but instead they just dance around, maybe someone lands a good punch, maybe not.

Well, you'd be arguing with yourself . I never claimed Boxing was superior in any way. Boxing is boxing. Other forms of mayhem are mayhem and nothing else. Kicking someone in their gesticles does nothing for me. If I were in such close proximity to some one acting out like that; i'd reach for my revolver. : )
