Giant Eastern Cicada Killers

Got ten of them in my pool area, they fly around threateningly, but the males have puny stingers without venom, and the female stings only under extreme provocation, a minor bite.

Come out every July (in NJ) for two monthes, scare the #$#% out of pool visiters, then disappear. Wierd thing is the males appear to be sharpening their stingers on the concrete- inadequacy issues?

Anyone else have these visitors?

The first time I saw those things was on a golf course. I opted to drop a ball elsewhwere and take the stroke.

See them every July. They live in holes in the ground. Called Digger Wasps around here and Cicada Killer Wasps on Wikipedia.

Mean looking things

Pretty common around here. They scared the crap out of us as kids. They dig nests in the ground.

We have them around here too. Although they are not likely to hurt you, they are prone to making you hurt yourself. Scary looking critters.

I have a nearby underground nest in our yard.

They are the B-52's of wasps.

They are very docile. I used to have a nest right by my driveway, and they would buzz around me as I washed my car. Freaked my neighbor out, but they never once bothered me so I left them alone.

You don't want to be a cicada though, if one of them is around, they are very efficient cicada killers. They then drag the corpse into their nest for the youngsters to gnaw on.

My advice is to leave then alone, maybe even enjoy them if you can bring yourself to do so.

Pretty common around here also. As mentioned, scary looking but they don't come after you.

Watching them attack a cicada is a sight.

Docile or not, I would turn it into a grease spot given the opportunity. Don't recall seeing those around Michigan, not that we have a shortage of vile insects.

LOL MSB! True! And if driving--OTHERS as well. I had one of these inside the cab of my truck years back, and let me tell you, it got my attention.

I’ve lived my entire life in the Northeastern U.S. and have never seen one of these buggers up close. Coincidentally, I don’t hear many cicadas tonight...

I have had them in the playground sand at the picnic grounds for a few years. Unsettling for the guests, but no one has been bitten AFAIK. Nests are pretty easy to spot and I hit them with some wasp spray.

Nastier wasps have been nesting around the grounds lately. The ones that bite. I tried to kill them with a torch, but that didn't work. A combination of torch, spray and shovel extracted a nest that was about the size of a Whopper and lots of larvae.
