FDP Forum / Fender Guitars: Stratocasters / New 2008+ Strat or 2003 Highway Strat?

Any opinions on this? I found a 2003 Highway Strat that I find really nice, resonant and light and sounds good. However, I continue to drool over the newer strats, I love the changes Fender made in 2008 and most new strats I play are incredible. I bought the Highway strat for $600 and could easily get that if I sold since it is hard to find first or second year Highway strats with the wider American Standard string spacing and the vintage 6 point trem in mint condition.

Should I stay or should I go? LOL! :-)

Depends on if you like the taller frets or not on the '08 model.

What is the consensus on the quality between the two years and models?

I owned several pre 08 strats and 1 08.The 08 uses thinner poly undercoat and more traditional looking saddles. I thought the quality was a tad better on the 08, but not by much. I liked the glossy neck on the 08 vs the satin on the earlier models. I ended up hating the Modern C necks on all of them , so I sold them and went in a different direction.

My 2003 Highway has the thinnest finish I have seen on a strat body or neck. Very resonant.

You have a Strat that you like specifically over ones that you like on paper/in theory.

The 2008+ model year isn't going anywhere.

Save your ducats and just buy one when you have the cash, keeping the one you like.
