That indeed is a loss for the world of bassists.

There's an obituary in the Detroit papers, saying he died in a cancer hospice this morning.

Rest in peace, Bob. You taught me well, and you’ll continue teaching me for years to come.

I guess this is as appropriate place as any to confess that I’ve frequently enjoyed rolling my mouse pointer over the home page buttons on Bob’s web site just so I could hear his unique voice.

Cancer can be a silent killer. I didn't tell anyone about my dad's illness until after he died. Condolences.

Very sad loss. Duck Dunn, Levon Helm, Doc Watson, and now Bob. So many of my music heroes passing this year. Very sad indeed.

Sad to here, I loved Motown music and the musicians that were behind it all.

The world of bass playing has lost a modest and humble man who was a true master of the instrument we all love.

Bob was the guy I tried to mimic on soul songs when I first started gigging around 1970. His bass groove was always so solid.

RIP.

My goodness, I join those who are surprised to learn he had cancer. I talked to him on the phone several years ago, just briefly, and he sounded strong and healthy. What a huge loss. His recordings will be teaching bass players for generations to come.

I didn't know he was sick either. In my RnB band, Bob's parts are attempted. I'm the bass player so I'm the one attempting them. Notes are easy... groove? dynamics? Bob was one of a kind. In many different ways. He could play and then he could fit in. And he grooved. Midnight Train? Signed Sealed Delivered? Barry Gordy sure had a good thing going and he knew how to promote (and hide) talent. Bob is/was one of my all time favorites. I'm typing on an internet forum so take this for what it is. I'm very sad for him and his family. And for me.

Sad news, indeed. Last night I spun the Spinners' "Pick of the Litter" album in his honor. It's a great soul LP worthy of comparison to any of the other great ones and it's 100% Babbitt!

The one bass player I'd have always liked to be. Pleasant, kind, humble and yet a towering talent. Between him and Jamerson they transformed bass playing and showed how important and vital it could be.

Really sad he's gone, but what a legacy as a person and as a musician!
