"Has anybody every seen or played a dog relic ?"
I wouldn't say "dog" but would say "not up to snuff."
I've played some CC's and NOS versions, and the Relics, as a group, seem better to me. And I also stated that because Fender charges the most for Relics, that perhaps they get better wood, although all are supposed to be from the same batch. I think the Relics get the best of that batch.
Also, less finish = more open tone.
Looks don't matter that much, although they can help matters. It's how they sound and play that matter most.

I bought an expensive bicycle in college...1972. It was white...a beautiful high end Fugi.
I painted over the frame with a combination of spray rust primer and brushed white paint...flat.
The bike looked like a rusty junker when I was done. It never got stolen. (BTW, the paint I used came off easily revealing the nice, factory paint job.)

I actually bought a used, lightly reliced Wildwood 10 '57 Strat. I don't think I would have sprung for a heavy relic - they're just too over-the-top for me, but to each his own. This Strat is really quite an amazing player, and I don't really even tink about the finish when I play it. I keep it out on a Stand and play it daily. I'm not sure if/when I will even play it out on a gig, but I don't think I will ever off it either.

Not really. Aesthetically those items are different. They are pretty much throw aways. They ware out or break down and you replace them.

"They are pretty much throw aways."
Most people don't consider cars, airplanes, or even fridges as throw-aways.
"They ware (wear) out or break down and you replace them."
Guitar don't wear out? Isn't that the concept of relicing? What about amps? Why aren't they reliced?
"There isn't a picture of an old beat-up car or airplane, etc. inside the Layla album."
Good point! But have you ever seen a paisley fridge?

For the sake of discussion I sure don't see many cars, airplanes, tvs or fridges from the 50s or 60s around here, if any.

Fender did a relic'ed tweed Blues Junior complete with frayed tweed, water rings (like someone set a cold beer on top of the amp), torn grille cloth, and rusted screws.

There are plenty of old beat up cars on the road. In addition, there is an annual car show in our town with cars as old as the 30's, but the idea is to keep them in pristine condition, not to intentionally relic them.
I just don't get the attraction of taking a perfectly good guitar and beating it up to make it look like it's been played a lot. YMMV

The car comparison is interesting. People go to great expense to restore old beat up cars to pristine condition. You never see a new being sold with dents or rust or sun-faded paint.

Cars are relic'd these days. There is a whole new class of street rod built to look old rusty and beat to crap. I'd don't like the look but their out there.
I don't care for relic'd guitars either but for those who do there is a market.
I did have an amp customer who wanted a relic'd DR. I found a beat used cab and a beat up balck faceplate on the bay. It cost him an extra $600.
I build my LPTT in a used tweed cab not for the look but for the price of the cab....$40.

A 1950's car looks like a 1950's car even if it's in pristine condition.
A brand new '57 AVRI looks like a brand new Stratocaster UNLESS it's reliced then it looks like an old guitar.
As I mentioned, I reproduce antique furniture in various stages of distress according to the customers taste. Some people want the piece to look very old and distressed and some people want it lightly distressed.
I can be in my shop hammering away on a piece of furniture to age it, and another customer will walk in , all distraught and asks me if I can repair a scratch on his prized end table.
Different strokes ... etc etc.

I don't either, or didn't till I played a few. All I care about is a great guitar, and there are a lot of gems in this bunch, so I won't write 'em off. I guess you could call me a convert, because before I played 'em, I was as dismissive as many of you in this thread.

I think it is about as stupid as my daughter paying high price for "new" worn out jeans with holes in the knees. When I was growing up people thought you were poor if you wore jeans with holes and tears. I saw a special on cable tv 2 years ago where Fender allowed the reporter to take a rope with metal objects on the ends to whack a guitar and basically told him there was a fine line between just right and too many hits that could turn an expense "banged up" (my words) guitar into a loss.

"The best relic is the one you bought new and played the crap out f in bars for 20 years. And I don't mean wine bars."
What's wrong with wine bars? In fact, what IS a wine bar?
Count me in the "don't care but wouldn't pay extra for it" camp.
