Demoed a LTD "Tele" relic this morning. Sounded great, played well with excellent fret job, nice 50s neck. Minor downside was the rusty 9s on it, loose bent stripped screws that were considered a part of the relicing, and some minor roughness on the maple board where the sander crudely chipped the poly. Not all relicing is visual- maybe half of the relic damage affects functionality like a mistreated guitar, not just a well used guitar. Overall reasonable deal for 350 bones. If I needed a guitar right now I might have come home with it -and fix the stupid screws. I own no "relics" and would not consider that a selling point. Price, tone, and playability trump that.

Someone in another thread posted about a Nash they just got. They only sell guitars that are relic'd, I guess. I just look at those and say "What a shame!".

I laughed when I saw the guitar deal of the day from one of the online vendors - a relic'd ESP Strat copy with a Floyd for $250.
I just sort of cringed.
Now it's hit the low end. God help us all.

Man, we guitar players have never had it so good.... there's a niche for just about every taste. If you don't like something you don't have to look very far to find something you DO

guitar makers make what they think will sell.
imo, the bottom line is... and what no one will admit. folks who buy a relic guitar are doing so because they think it's cool. they want to give others a certain impression. one that says "i've played so much and so hard that my guitar is all beat up."... "look at me and my old guitar"
sure some buy them because they feel that's the best guitar for them and that's cool. but i think most are attracted for the look and impression it pouts out.
i think some of them look cool. but i'd feel pretty silly saying, "ya i paid for someone to scratch up my brand new guitar"

I have owned two or three reliced Fenders and when I played out with them never did I have to explain myself or the story about the guitar. All I heard were compliments on how good they sounded, even from fellow musicians.
After reading this thread it seems to me the people that dislike the idea of playing a reliced guitar have this preconceived opinion of them with no hands-on experience. Hey, that's fine by me.

ROTFLMAO I'm going to go buy one now, I didn't realize that's all it took to get geezers panties all twisted up.
Guitar manufactures like making money. People like spending money on something different.
BTW, Reliced model trains have been the most expensive trains for years. I have a friend that makes a great living doing nothing more than painting or repainting trains to match pictures of actual trains in a book.
I've got no dog in this hunt. When I got my '02 R8 it was a "custom Authentic" which was patina and dull. I buffed it out. Now it's 10 times worse than it was, and has areas where I've worn through the paint and I love the way it looks. I have no beef with someone buying a guitar that looks like a guitar I've owned for 10 years. more power to them.

I wish they made a reliced Tom Delonge strat. That would probably send some of you guys completely over the edge. LMAO.

that would be the equivalent to Tribute guitars i'd imagine. a replica of one that existed. and those are the most $$$ too.

To add insult to injury, I've seen one, held one and shook my head at one... the finish is photoflame relicing... seriously, it's absolutely hidious...

Hah, photoflame relic.
I was wondering how they'd make the cheap relic work with poly finish. I have a couple genuine relic'd poly finishes that went down to the wood, sometimes 1/16th of an inch through the everything (less on the MIJ Mustang where the finish was M&M candy coating thin and about as brittle around the strpa pin) and they don't relic like nitro, that's for sure.
