I had a 1970 SG Special (P-90's with whammy) back in 1971. I also had an SG Classic (P-90's) that I had to sell quickly due to a death in the family along with some other stuff. I really missed both. But I always wanted an SG with PAF's or close and the Standard fits that bill for me. I looked hard at VOS, 61 Reissue, and several signature models but the Standard has everything I really want for a reasonable (for Gibson) price. I sure hope this one is a keeper and I believe it will be.

I recently bought a heritage cherry 2012 SG Standard too. I was suspicious about the whole 2-ply rosewood fretboard thing but this is seriously the nicest SG I've owned, or even played.
The Plek'd frets make it insanely playable, and the finish feels more cured than my previous Gibsons.
I'd sold off my three Gibsons about a year ago and have been squarely in the Epiphone camp now that I no longer gig. Plugged in, I still like my G400 Custom a lot, but there's something about the Honduran mahogany and construction methods Gibson uses that result in an undeniably superior instrument in terms of sound quality, resonance, harmonics, sustain, etc.

Let us know how you like it! I've always wanted one, just never got around to trying one out. I've got a friend that has an SG from the early 70's, killer guitar.

RE Secret Chief's remarks- A Gibson is a Gibson. An Epiphone isn't.

I'm still trying to decide whether to get a Gibson SG or a Flying V.
I used to play Flying V's back in the 80's during my fulltime pro musician days and love how they play, sound and look, but I wonder if I'm too old for one now (particularly for live work)?
Hmmmm . . . should I follow jhawkr's lead?

i originally bought an SG a few years a go. a limited run based of a '61 RI. hated the clean tone and sold it. but i was drawn to SG's again a few months ago and bought a Standard. this time it's a perfect fit. cleans are great, od and gain are amazing. such an easy guitar to play and killer tone all around!
i'm playing it with an Orange Tiny Terror head and woooweee it sounds good! like a mini plexi... lots of crunch!
in fact i liked the tone so much that at a "rock" jam i set up i only took the Orange head and the SG. used a cab at the studio and no pedals. the other guitar player made 3 trips to his car and unwrapped a huge pedal board... and looked at me like i was naked. but the tone speaks for it's self and everyone dug the sound.
SG's rock! congrats on yours... hope it's a winner!

zzounds has the 8 payment zero interest deal on the SG Standard. 149.88/mo. I think American Musical has something similar. None of the FDP sponsors are doing anything like this unless you get one of their credit cards. This deal bills your current card.

Lots of SG owners on here. I'm surprised Kents hasn't chimed in.
It's a good guitar for the money.

I have a '72 Std and an '09 Special Satin Ebony. Both are great players. The '72 is a bit more mellow with the t-tops. The Special will be sweet when needed, but it'll tear your head off and crap down your neck when you want that. It's my favorite guitar now days. I never thought anything would knock my beloved AmStd Strat HSS off the top spot, but the Special did it with it authority.

My SG arrived today but it's 110 right now and it's been riding around in a truck all day so I opened it outside to check for obvious damage then cased it and brought it in to acclimate. Probably won't do anything with it today. I saw it long enough to know that they sent an SG LTD Standard, not a Standard. They are the same price but the LTD has the baked maple fingerboard. I'm going to keep an open mind and check it out before I decide to keep or return. The "Aged Cherry" finish is gorgeous. Very deep color. I'm thinking the baked maple probably plays more like ebony. Smoother surface. Who knows, I may like it better!

The neck is a fairly fat "c", string height is perfect. It just feels good all the way up and down the neck. Far superior to my 60's LP Tribute neck-wise. I'd like to have the P90 version too!

I've been playing the SG Ltd Ed Standard heavily over the last week and I've got to say, "What took me so long to get one of these"! I absolutely love it. Although it does the rock thing very, very well, it is by no means a one trick pony. Another big plus is I can play it without my hand hurting much. (Tendonitis). So far I've played it through the VHT Special 6 Ultra and my Vox AC15CC1. Killer through the little Vox. Next week I'm hooking up to the 67 and 73 Bandmasters.

That is the exact feeling I had after getting my SG. I couldn't believe how perfect a guitar it is for me - the neck, the light weight, the overall feel and versatility of tone. I had always been a Fender guy. In fact, I never even liked the way SGs looked. Never bothered to pick one up in over 25+ years of playing guitar. I had as many as 3 Strats and 4 Teles at one point, but the only electric I've cared to play over the past few years has been the SG.
