Followed Bass-flyer's "no Treble" link in the Jamerson bass amp thread and found this amazing track of Sir Paul isolated on bass for the Sgt. Pepper track of Lovely Rita. Fascinating stuff.

I recall reading somewhere that on the later Beatles sessions Paul often laid the bass track down last. This was a definite advantage giving him the ability to build an inventive bass line around what was already recorded. Of course with this method you give up some spontaneity with the other players but it certainly worked well for him!

there are approx 24 isolated tracks on there (not tutorials, etc). That's cool.

Neat.

Geoff Emerick’s “Here, There and Everywhere: My Life Recording the Music of The Beatles” (2007) contains a lot of interesting insights on the recording of Paul’s bass parts.

He does have great bass lines but I hate that dull thud from his bass (Hoffner I presume).

I’m fairly certain that “Rita” was the Rick 4001S. But yeah — he was very much into the muted sound at that time.

It's a Ric. His "dull thud" sounds awful in isolation, but when mixed with other instruments, it sounds brilliant.

Ricks can be a one trick pony when used in a limited fashion. But they are a two pickup, long scale bass. Can be quite versatile if you use them properly like any other bass.

That can be said of any bass, but Ricks seem to get the most bashing, especially, at that other forum, you know?

It is amazing how many sounds one can get out of one pony. :)

If the Ric is one trick pony, what is the P? A half trick pony?

A similar argument / debate could be made for a Precision. It's all in how the player uses & understands the instrument.

If Ric's and Hofners and P's are "1 trick ponies"

then...

Sir Paul and James Jamerson (among many others) are proof that it ain't the pony, it's the playah.

McCartney's playing on Pepper made me want to play bass. Some people might criticise Pepper in that the main musician on that record was Paul.

His playing has such musicality, flair, and joy in it on a track like this. Hard to put a finger on it, but it's there.

I can play Lovely Rita note for note, but I might as well be a robot compared to him.
