(Although I know better) I've purchased 3 different necks off eBay in the last two months, all three had defects and I've sent them back.

I think it's a sign of the times. Sellers are listing blems and seconds as Mint or Excellent and figuring buyers are too distracted or ignorant to follow up with a complaint and/or return. One of the legit sellers (who's been mentioned on this board) has 152 non-positive feebacks in the last 12 months, but his volume is so high his percentage satisifed still looks good. Frankly, if I had 152 dis-satisifed customers in the last 12 months I'd find another line of work.

I've been talking with a few boutique shops as well, but their customer service is pretty scary...I'm thinking I might have more returns in my future. One of them raised their prices by 75% overnight, no explanation.

Are the days of a honest easy deal gone?

Given the flakiness of ebay people and the number of buyers who use feedback as an extortion method, I'd say the listed seller is doing quite fine based on volume.

Some of the negative dings are just ridiculous.

I've found ebay to be generally safer as a buyer in recent years than in the past to be honest.

And blems and seconds might well be excellent condition or better, especially if they're 'seconds' because of overstock.

Sorry you had a bad deal, it happens sometimes but when buying used parts (and frankly, all parts are used once you start taking guitars apart and piecing them out).

But 98% or better on ebay is hell to accomplish. I had a guy who got all angry on a guitar I sold because it had some dust on it - which I accurately described in the listing *and* it showed in the photos.

He left stupid 'positive' feedback I gave up on trying to have removed, and since listing is long gone, can't point to the item or my description to point out he knew what he was buying.

A different neck is just an excuse to buy a whole 'nother guitar, right?

Go for the gusto!

FleaBay ain't what it used to be 10 years ago. Everything has a bell curve of utility over the long run - haven't seen too many exceptions to that rule in cyberspace over the years ("Hey Zuckerberg - you paying attention here?").

There are good suppliers to be had though... for necks I'd still lean towards the older Allparts / Warmoth brigade. You only want one good neck so pay a bit more and get it right first time. My $0.02.

Plus: The Shop is just over the State Line. If anyone is dissatisfied , I can get up there and run over him !!!!

Just kidding ... Did you see how many necks he has??!!! If I were younger, i'd be at his front door asking if I could "Pick Through"his stuff. A good assembler could take his time and put together a real Custom Shop guitar for $2500.00 or so. Expensive? Yep, but. You could pick Fender, Fralin or Gretsch pups. Pick from 1,000 Necks. Any type of tuner, etc.

The Internets and eBay are just tools to help you. They don't promise perfection !

Read the negative and neutral feedback, if you have 10-20 minutes, I think it pretty much says it. You may be relying a little too much on the bias inherent in big numbers.

About half of the negative feedbacks are from people who didn't understand that they were buying pieces from parted-out guitars.

Several people complained that he refunded their money instead of sending them the item. A bunch of complaints that he doesn't do returns/refunds if he sends you the part you ordered, but the part you ordered doesn't fit your guitar.

So about 3/4 of the negs look baseless to me.

From the rest I get the impression that he doesn't always communicate well, that he can be slow to resolve disputes, and that about a dozen things a year fall through the cracks and take many weeks before he ships them.

Some customers are never happy and just aren't worth having.

Just look at anything on Amazon. Products that are known to be the gold standard of their kind are trashed by people who are either ignorant or nuts.

I'm sure every seller on eBay has to deal with buyers with unrealistic expectations as well as those who are trying to rip them off.

Dude, if you're finding fault with a seller that has a 99.8% positive feedback percentage, then you probably shouldn't be using eBay.

I am picky when I'm paying top dollar for "Mint" condition items.

So, you sell buyers blemed items, ...they wait weeks to get them, ...then they have to eat the return shipping, ...and the validation for this practice is "volume"?

How about a stripped truss rod nut, is that picky?

I'm sure Meg would have said these are her ideal eBay sellers.

There is no doubt I'm suffering the cummulative effects of three bad deals in a row; but sellers who list items as mint, excellent, etc. when the item has obvious defects - I'd throw them off eBay, regardless of their "volume".

No a stripped truss rod is not picky....but isnt it possible that the seller had no idea it was stripped?...just a thought..

if he's a stand up guy he would have offered return etc..

anyway...sorry that u got stuck 3 times in a row....

Agreed they can be returned, but $17 in return shipping every time? It's hardly a fair or painless remedy. It seems no eBay sellers offer to pay / reimburse return shipping...and after what I'm seeing lately I can understand why.

One more person done with eBay sellers.
