As you may remember, I was thinking about trying to recover my Tama kit. But, I was in a drum shop the other day and saw a set of Mapex drums covered in a kind of transparent red finish. They appeared to be red from a distance but the closer you got you could actually see the wood grain under the red. I thought they were beautiful, and instantly went weak in the knees. The shell pack for the 5 piece kit was $499. I'm thinking about buying them, but before I take the plunge, I wanted to run it past you guys/gals, to see what you think? I know Mapex apparently at least was, a good brand of drums, as many pro drummers played them. I just want to make sure the quality is still there today. And, I'd like to know if you think Mapex would be a step up from Tama, a step down, or perhaps just a lateral move? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!

Both Tama and Mapex make great drums... each brand has their entry level through to flagship pro level drums... so if you are comparing apples with apples I'd go for whatever appeals to you.

Thanks so much Lazmo! I should have stated that I currently own a Tama Imperalistar kit and was looking at a Mapex Meridan kit. I'm guessing the quality is similar? The Tama kit sounds good with all heads being upgraded and tuned. I'm guessing, I wouldn't be losing anything "sound wise' moving to Mapex, provided, I change out all of the heads and properly tune the kit?
