we're preplanning for those cold and dreary nights in May 2016 when there is no Spring ClamFest ;-)

or maybe just for February when Football is over and Irish music for St Patrick's hasn't really kicked in yet

I am bumping this up, after the bad news about Clamfest 2015. I have sent an e-mail inquiring about availability, to the Electric Maid, a venue in Tacoma Park NW DC. I asked about a Saturday in Feb.

Should I contact the Rock Shop, or do you want to, SteveCarlo?

I can do it. and I'm going to an event at 7 drums studios tomorrow. I haven't been there before but Flashband uses it for meet-up jams so I'll do some scouting

I went to this place today. (first time I used a jamb hub... Really cool!!!!)

they have several very small rooms which won't work but the performance room can hold 15-20 people (they say up to 30 but that would be tight) it has a raised stage and seating area. Drums keyboard, bass & guitar amps.
it is in the city, there is ample parking across the street (usually free during the day on weekends. if the place next door isn't having an event)
there are a few bars very close by and they will let us bring in food & beer (with in reason I suppose....as long as we don't gum up the gear.

it is normally $30/hr but the owner said if we want a 4-5 hour block he could drop that to $25/hr

so if we can get 10-20 people the cost would be nominal

Pete spoils us with the deal he gives at OTL, but this is in line with other rehearsal spaces I've rented

I'll check the rates for the rock shop

it is larger, more room to sit and bigger stage area, and probably cheaper since it isn't downtown.
but parking is a bit of a hassle and it is less convenient for folks from MD

I heard from The Electric Maid, which is a funky, storefront collective in Takoma Park, DC, which hosts bands and open mics regularly. They would rent the place to us for 8 hours for $150 total, on a SUNDAY, but not Saturday. We could use their sound system for an additional $50 (operated by their sound guy only), or use our own system.

Alcohol would be okay but has to be "low key and in cups and kept out of sight (we are an all ages space and cannot be seen as serving nor facilitating), we are in DC which is VERY retentive and political, on alcohol enforcement."

I guess that means we could have a keg or two and cups. Catered food is okay, too. Seems like a good possibility if we don't need the venue to be fancy.

I have asked them to give me the room and stage dimensions and people capacity...

[UPDATE:] Room is 900 square feet, stage holds rock band of 5 or 6, room holds 48 people officially but 80 have been squeezed in.

It seems we have a couple of options now. Is anyone getting interested?

Possible dates for a DC jam (for me, that is) before St. Patrick's Day on March 17.

February 27-28
March 5-7
March 12-13

Is there demand for this?

[Edited to eliminate Super Bowl Weekend.]

I've only heard 3-4 voices in support, so far, but maybe people's focus is on the Nov. makeup jam in New Jersey. If some of the FDP's popular jammers get behind the idea, this might happen.

I'm new at helping organize a jam, so what do you think is the minimum committed number of players to make an FDP jam successful? I'm thinking 12 or 15...

Andrew the number varies. I believe it is dependent on the size of the venue. A basement jam cant support more than the basement can hold or people will have to wait outside of the basement for their turn and not be able to enjoy the jam. Likewise the OTL is huge and can support many people.

The other factor is how long the jam is for. Obviously the more time (= more songs) allows more people to play.

for what has been described here- a bar/restaurant with a back room I think you are correct in the 12-15 head count

if I am available I will be there
Let me know if you want/need any help from me on the administrative end.

I'm keeping an eye here, to see if there is enough interest in a DC/MD/VA event in 2016, but am relaxed about it...

Build it and they will come.....set up a month and see who is available and what date to get a head count. If the place you are looking at is a pay to play (studio) get an approx cost. So you can give an approx donation amount.

I will show up if available. I will also offer to run the google docs site and make the books. That administrivia can take time but if you have done it a while like I have you get the process down :)

We're looking hard at Saturday, March 5, 2016.

A 6-hour jam that day would take the chill off of winter. It gives us enough advance notice to do right by the music. Yet is before DC Shamrockfest and well before St. Patty's day.

I am checking out a promising venue this week, and--if all goes well--will announce in a new thread soon...

I'm in for March. I can provide a complete PA if needed. It's collecting dust in the basement.

We have a date: Sunday, March 6. I have booked a nice big room with a stage that handles bands. It's in the Takoma neighborhood of DC, a cool community near the Maryland border.

Setup starts 11 a.m. with first song at noon and running till 5, then packup. We could go later but this timing should help the out-of-towners get on the road.

We might need a PA; as we can only use theirs if one of their volunteer techs is available.

More details in a new thread later today. But...

The FDP's rockin' March on Washington is happening!
