We had the hit but Van got the money

A warning to those who lust. Back in '09 I impulse-bought a NOS 2000 Fessler-built Fender Robben Ford Elite off Ebay. Over time I just didn't bond with the guitar and last year in an effort to raise some funds for a new furnace decided I'd let it go. YIKE-A-ROONEYS, did I take a beating on resale. Not sure why but Custom Shop Robbens, particularly the Elites just don't sell any more. Was happy to recoup 50% of my investment to get rid of it. Oddly, it seems the earlier Japanese-made spruce top Robbens still sell. Glad I kept mine! ;-)

Yeah, this is a problem with many low-production guitars that are otherwise fantastic tonemonsters. About the only folks that pay premium $$ are collectors. Otherwise--you get soaked on resale.

I should think that few really expensive vintage guitars today are bought by players.

Meanwhile, the Japanese made Robben Fords are appreciating and sell fairly well. My '93 that I've now had fro 25 years has nore than doubled in value. Picked up another one at a fair price that's pristine.
