My good friend has developed a raging case of the Shingles. It started out with a headache that lasted for 4 days along with a shoulder pain (he plays bass)and said we couldn't get together. That was two weeks ago and now he has a NASTY rash from the top of his shoulder running up his neck, up the side of his face to his hair line. This stuff is bad! I'm going to get vaccinated ASAP. Ops! I meant to put this in Moes!!

I was at a maintenance turnaround at an oil refinery in Edmonton, Alberta last spring. I ran into an acquaintance whom I hadn't seen in ten years. First thing he told me about was his experience with shingles. He advised me to get the vaccination.

Before I retired last year (boilermaker), I spent a good portion of my life in that area working at oil refineries and coal-fired generating stations.

During those years, I had a family doctor there so I went to see him at the end of the turnaround to get a prescription. As soon as I mentioned shingles, he told me about his experience with shingles and advised me to get the shot which I did. The pharmacist in the adjoining pharmacy gave me the shot. It was a spring-loaded needle and painless for all you needle haters.

What's the criteria for getting the shot? Isn't it recommended only after a certain age and does having had chicken pox play into it too?

Definitely after 60, especially if you had Chicken Pox as a child. A guy in my Astronomy club said the first 3 days of itching was kinda bad, but the next 11 days of burning was unbearable.

Big problem is Medicare does not pay, but the Part D Drug Plan does. I never used the deductible so I am looking at $200 or so for the shot. If you have met the deductible, the co-pay is $60 - $80. My wife told me to quit being cheap about it & pay for the shot.

I had them in 2010. I was 53. I would not wish shingles on anyone.

The rash went from my navel around my right hip to the middle of my back. A strip about 6 inches wide. The best line and just below. Pain like you just can't believe. I'm blessed with the nerve damage some get from having shingles. It was a sever case. Some days I must medicate. It bothers me to some degree every day.

Get the shot if you're over 50. Insurance covers it in most cases at 60 but it is worth it even if you have to pay. Most pharmacies can do it for you. Some will even come down on the price if your ins. won't kick in.

Even if you still get shingles the case will be far less sever after the vaccination. Get the shot if you've had chicken pox and are 50 or over.

I had shingles when I was six yrs old (1951). In those days, penicillin was considered the miracle, cure-all drug.

I remember a huge rash and how much those awful shots in the butt hurt.

And, of course, we know now penicillin did nothing to cure the shingles. No fun at all...
