So, when did the MIM Standard go to med jumbo frets?

I think they made the change in 2006. If I'm not mistaken (and I could very well be) the change that year applied to MIM Strats as well.

AFAIK, the Am Std also has medium jumbo fret wire.
(at least current production ones)

Depends. Tall frets make it easier to do bends but harder to do slides. It's easier to play chords in tune with lower frets.

I think of taller jumbo frets as being more oriented towards soloing and lower vintage frets as more oriented towards rhythm guitar or chord-melody.

Yep, 2006, the year when upgraded MIM Tele and Strat Standards were released. Overall these models had a better overall fit and finish compared to the previous versions (and the Strat had an upgraded trem block too, finally got rid of the nasty pot metal block, so soft it could be used as a spread).
