Ok guys, I took the plunge and put a down payment on my first masterbuilt Stratocaster.

The builder I chose is Paul Waller. If anyone has experience with him id love to hear! I don't know Paul, but I chose him based on his prior experience and his availability.

Here are the specs I sent to Fender (pictures not attached of course):

1. General – Period correct 1968 like the white Woodstock strat Jimi played

2. Right handed strat body. Sort for light wood. I don’t know if they used alder or ash in 68, choose the period correct wood.

3. Body color – metallic purple. See the attached photos for the color (2 photos)…a deep rich purple/blue is what I want (not matte but not too sparkly). Finish will be NOS (New Old Stock)

4. I want a period correct maple cap neck reverse headstock…with no walnut plug for the truss rod. I want the bold black slinky 68 style fender logo. See the attached photo for the exact neck. 4 bolts (period correct). Also I want the slight cutout where you can see the truss rod adjustment screw at the base of the neck, period correct for 68. I would like rolled fingerboard edges. Neck color -not bright blonde if possible…(picture attached)…has a slightly darker aged tone to it…more yellowish brown. Neck Radius – 7.25. Period correct fret dots on the fingerboard…and fret dots on the side of the neck visible from the top (since it’s a reversed neck). Bone nut (period correct white color)

5. 5 way pickup selector.

6. Vintage (period correct) bridge 6 screws (large steel block not cast, period correct). Right handed (tremolo bar on the bottom near the controls).

7. Reverse direction bridge pickup. See photo. Custom reverse routed bridge pickup cavity (photo represents the routing…but needs to be reversed for the bridge pickup). (no large square route). All pickups should have pole piece height reversed (as if strings were strung upside down like Jimi did)

8. Large frets – 6105.

9. Strings 11’s high E. I currently use boomers 11 – 52 but open to suggestions for this guitar…I just know I want it to start with 11’s for the high E string.

10. For the pickups I would like 68 voodoo set. These have the pole pieces reverse staggered and their output seems to be in the 6 – 6.8k range. If they could be hand wound in the US that would be great. Pickguard – Aged white/cream…or off white period correct 3 ply. Whatever would go best with the rich purple/blue body. Pickup covers to match pickguard.

11. Controls – standard double tone and volume match the color of the pickup covers.

12. Period correct tuners (F tuners I believe)

13. Silver (chrome) hardware (bridge, tremolo, cable jack, Strap nuts, screws, and tuners) period correct.

14. Set up the tremolo so it is flat on the deck. I should be able to push down on the tremolo but not pull up. (no floating tremolo)

15. Tons of mojo…I’m a tone freak!

Let me know what you think!

If you can afford a CS guitar, then surely you can pop the $30 for a Contributing Membership so that you can post photos.

Also, I am being somewhat sarcastic. This is my original user name. I created Voodoo68...then Chris helped me restore this one.

Thanks Chris!

Looks like you know exactly what you want. Good choices; I look forward to seeing the photos after the wait. That's the worst part- try and pretend you don't have a guitar on order- unless of course you don't have a sticky mind.

I have no experience with Waller but was relieved to see you're going for a NOS finish, as I've seen some of his relic work was not to my taste.

I'm also unsure as to whether it would be ash or alder for this model, let us know- alder I would imagine as I've never seen any paint sink or evidence of ash poking through on those guitars- but then that might be due to a polyester finish being used then? I have an ash 63 sunburst masterbuild where the finish has sunk into grain- I love that look. It's a relic though, maybe they'd prepare it more thoroughly on a NOS.

Sit tight, let us know any progress.

I'm curious why it takes one year. Does the builder cut down the tree and mill the wood too? :-p

Different builders have different lead times based on their schedule. I picked Paul Waller partly because his schedule was the best...still 8-14 months out.

I suspect its that long because they have orders to fill before then.

I was told that Paul will contact me personally to go over the specs of my guitar when he starts the build...which could be in 8-10 months from now.

Well, it sounds Grande. I've eyed a few eBay offerings from MJT for his Strat bodies finished in "metallic Crown Royal Purple", but they're usually relic'd beyond my taste.

Well, it will probably be my first and last Masterbuilt strat. I have been such a Fender fan my whole 35 year playing career I just had to try it.

I go try other guitars and I just don't like the feel, for me it has to be a fender.
