FDP Forum / Fender Custom Shop / What kind of Custom Shop do I have on my hands here?

Greetings FDP Forum,

I am a first time poster here, and was actually referred to this forum by Fender themselves.

I recently came into possession of a "1997 Fender Custom Shop Anniversary Stratocaster", #4 out of 10 made. It came in the original HSC with the receipt of purchase as well as the COA.

To my knowledge there is no Fender or Stratocaster anniversary in 1997. I contacted Fender and was told they have no idea what it could be, and since it is a Custom Shop it could really be an anniversary anything. I was told to post on this forum in hopes of someone recognizing what kind of guitar this actually is.

So if anyone has any information they could give me I would greatly appreciate it. I have created an Imgur album of the guitar for everyone to look at.

Thank you!

Here's wild guess.

While the COA is dated January 1997, that means the guitar was built in 1996. So I would concentrate more on years ending in "6."

Which means it couldn't be 1956, 'cause it has a rosewood fretboard. 1966? Not sure what it would commemorate with that. 1976? Beats me. But 1986 is possible as that may have been the year the Custom Shop really got up and cranking. So I would see if anyone else agrees with that one.

By the way...

That's a humdinger of a guitar, too. How does it sound and play?

It may be from a special run of 10 guitars made for a company (or similar) as commemorative pieces to celebrate some anniversary.

Curious there's no serial number stamped into the neck plate. The custom shop keeps records of guitars they produce. Strange that Fender couldn't help with an ID.

Have you popped the pickguard off to see what's under the hood?

If my memory serves me right, Fender's Custom Shop was created in 1987. Therefore, the "1997 Fender Custom Shop Anniversary Stratocaster" may have been produced in celebration of the Custom Shop's tenth anniversary. It may also explain why Efanos4's Strat is one of ten.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

So it turns out Texican is right, this guitar is for the 10th anniversary of Custom Shop, hence the #4/10 made. I reached out and got a hold of John Page last night, he's the one who signed the COA. He couldn't tell me much in the ways of value, he said it's worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.

If anyone is interested I will be posting it for sale on Reverb later this evening.
