FDP Forum / Fender Amps: Vintage (before 1985) / Fender Dual Showman Value?

Hi.... My father passed away unexpectedly last month. In going through his home, among the MANY electronic and guitar related items, I have come across a (I think) 1967 Fender Dual Showman amplifier. He has a note on it that it doesn't work - that it is only for parts. I guess he either never got around to fixing it or didn't want to bother. His long time friend has asked me about the amp. He wants to buy it for sentimental reasons. I understand that, and I would MUCH rather this go to someone who will fix it and enjoy it than for it to go to a stranger. Having said all of that... what would be a FAIR price, for both of us, for this amp? I know electronics, but guitar equipment is a little outside of my area of expertise. Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

Sorry for your loss my friend....

Tough call on value on an amp we can't see or inspect. Is it just the head or is it the head and speaker cabinet as well? Having done total rebuilds and restorations on such amps in the past, I can say it can be very expensive to restore or it could be a minor recap....having said that... a pig in a poke (unknown condition) amp head would likely be $500 to $1000 and with the cabinet about $900 to $1800. Of course, they do go for far more than that in excellent condition...and far less if they are in really bad shape...like burned up or highly ragged out.

I know that doesn't give you a pinpoint value, but it's pretty much what my experience would tell me.

Again, condolences on the loss of your father.

I sold a '69 Dual Showman Reverb head for $525 several years back.

Sorry for your loss.

It might be a good idea to take it to a tech to determine just what is wrong.
That will help a lot to determine what it is worth, as well as give the next owner a starting point toward repairing it.

I agree with 6G6. Spend the money to get a diagnosis. If you sell to your friend you can deduct the bench charge from the sale price. A blackface Dual Showman with the cabinet is a desirable amp.

If you do get it to a tech and he or she appraises it, do not take that at face value.

Go online (Reverb.com, fleaBay, etc.), and see what similar amps are going for. Demand is what sets the $$ value.

My condolences on the loss of your Father.

Does the amp have the word DUAL in block letters?
