I've been trying t find some information on line but have come up with zippo...

there is a pickup, used, that I am interested in but in the picture, the magnetic pole pieces have metal shavings stuck to them...from what I've heard, and I don't know how true it is, the shavings can work themselves into the windings and eventually wreak havoc on the pickups.

is there any truth to this?...and is there any way to correct it?

Someone may have filed fret without taping-over the pups.

Not sure if this would cause the pups to malfunction.

Perhaps you could use some scotch tape to remove the filings from the poles before removing the covers to avoid filing from getting on the windings...however scotch tape may work to remove filings there as well.

Tell the seller about the shavings and ask for a guarantee that the pups will work before committing to purchase

Masking tape, or even duct tape works well. The blue or yellow putty using for putting up posters works great.

Could be steel wool. Magnifying glass, some hemostats and a joint.

"Could be steel wool. Magnifying glass, some hemostats and a joint"

best post ever!

however..all of the suggestions will probably work as well...

"Tell the seller about the shavings and ask for a guarantee that the pups will work before committing to purchase"

well actually there are 2 pups involved and they both have an ohm reading that I would expect from them...but your suggestion is a good idea...

"Someone may have filed frets without taping over the pups."

Fretwire is non ferrous, Bueller :o) The shavings don't stick to pickup mags.

Steel wool, however, sure will. You can use gaffer tape, duct tape, bubble gum, Silly Putty, etc., to lift the particles off the poles.
