My amp randomly emits a beep tone that lasts around 2 seconds from the time I stop playing.

It sounds just like an old pager beep and it is consistent, I play for several hours every day and it happens several times a day. The main pedal I use is a tc dark matter but it beeps without any pedals turned on. The amp is around 10 years old and stock.

Any ideas?

You mention, "when I stop playing."

So, for example, it happens after you strum a chord and mute the strings--and you get a two-second beep tone?

Some possibilities:

Does it do it with the guitar straight into the amp (no pedal in the chain)? If so, try a different guitar cable.

Do you wear an electronic watch or an electro-fitness-gadget-monitor-thingy on the wrist of your pickin' hand? If so, take it off and see if the problem disappears.

Yes, exactly.

I will try the elimination process.

When I was in field service I was dispatched a call on a fax machine at Chrysler HQ in Auburn Hills MI. The complaint was that it was making a buzzing/vibrating noise. Sure enough I would hear it every minute or so. I pulled all the covers and tried isolating the noise, couldn't quite grasp where it was coming from. I must have fought with it for 20 minutes or so. Then I pulled the plug and, whoa, it did it again. My contact stopped by at that moment and as I was explaining it did it again. This time I noticed a metal mail slot behind the fax machine and saw a padded envelope vibrating. The customer opened it up and it was a pager.

Now this is totally useless information for this thread, but, uh, er....make sure the noise isn't happening with the amp unplugged.

:-p

GREAT story!

It's like the ol' "my guitar makes a ticking sound when I kick in high-gain pedals."

It's usually the watch on the picking hand that does it.

Sometimes a mobile phone in your pocket can get picked up and amplified along with guitar signal. It can make weird beeps and squeaks that will drive you nutty.

Peegoo, I do have a typical wireless network running and naturally a PC right next to my amp.. I shut the pc down to determine if the constant hissing, crackling and popping I have could be caused by them but it made no difference.

I did not mention this issue in my initial post and have pretty much just accepted it as being caused by other things plugged in to the electricity here. I have found info on "Tweed Disease" while searching. The tube socket cleaning sticky looks like something I should do?

As soon as my Granddaughter wakes up from her nap I will start eliminating things to get the beeping problem figured out. It also seems like the amp is breaking up (distorting) at low volume (I typically play at 3-4 volume) I have lots of problems all of a sudden :(, one of my strats has some overwound pups in it so I thought it was due to that but it does it with my 57/62 set as well.....

I will check back with you guys later. Thanks in advance for all the support!

It has been a while but here is the "What the heck was that anyway" factoid(s) Sheesh, the beep just went away after I started using a different cable and I was so excited I forgot about this thread. In the time since I have added a 100K volume control running thru my effects loop, I based it on a YT video Wampler has up and it works pretty slick! I used a Joyo Dyna Comp pedal case (just threw the joyo crap in the trash)I bought a Wampler "Ego" compressor and dig it....

Also a few TC pedals - Flashback/Viscous Vibe/Dark Matter and a Ditto looper, I am really surprised how little garbage noise I have now considering my amp volume is cranked up like it is but I am really digging this and it just makes me want to play more. Thanks for reading all this! I got nobody to talk gear with around here :(

I came up with that "volume box" many years ago here on FDP to tame a Blues Deluxe and get the controls off their touchy lower end. It was at least 15 years ago. I suggested a 100k audio control in a small box and put up a crude bmp drawing. It was dubbed the "volume box." Some people took the idea and started selling them on Ebay and still do.

Put "volume box" in the search engine here, and make sure you select "any time." There are dozens of posts especially in 2003-2004.

Steve, what happens when you either decrease or increase the pot size? I have a 100k pot in mine and it causes more breakup distortion than I think anyone would find useful so this thing has been collecting dust. The pot is "Alpha", I like the ability to turn the amp up but I cannot get clean tones at any level, would you mind assisting me with this?
