Just bought one online and will get it later this week. The HB in the neck position has been on my mind alot lately, actually I prefer the mini HB look but I think I can give this one a chance.

Always been a strat guy and just got the tele itch a couple months ago, any comments on the build quality of the MIM guitars in 94? I can always sell it if I don't like it right ;-)

i think this model sort of morphed into the California Series, circa 1997..I had one in white...I changed the bridge to a 3 saddle bridge and it was a fine guitar after that..nice neck and big frets.....worth every penny of 600 bills....

I sold it within a year but would buy another one without question.....

if the price is right, it's worth the gamble....

I have that guitar in red, from '96. It was a fine guitar as stock but I've never met a fender hb that I liked so I tried a few different things and settled on a SD mini in the neck and a dimarzio in the bridge. I have since swapped out the neck for one with a fat profile and that's how it's been for some years now. Nothing wrong with the original neck, I still have it.

I have read that some believe those earlier MIMs are somehow better than what came later. I don't know about that but I think you will like that guitar. I assume it will have five-way switching like mine, which I get a lot of use out of. Enjoy!

Got it today! Nice quality with some flame in the neck, absolute mint condition. Action is really low, neck is pretty thin and the fingerboard is slightly matte, if I were to guess it looks and feels like laquer (Body is poly or urethane?)

Really nice quality!!! Not enough playing to comment on the HB but it has the 5 way and TBX control. I think this was a good deal for $449.

Okay, I really love this guitar and the quality is pretty outstanding. I can live with the HB but it is pretty dull sounding unless I am pushing distortion, it rocks pretty well. I was looking at Guitar Fools profile pictures and the Lace Dually caught my eye and now my eye is on fire.

GF, if you happen to check this thread again can you share anything on how they sound in HB mode and or which flavor you have?

Anyone else want to chime in on this? They do look bitchin and this HB is going to be my next project, I don't know if you can get a sparkly crisp sound out of an HB in the neck position but if you can thats what I want.

That's why I like mini-buckers, and by that I mean gibson-style, not a single-coil sized humbucker. They occupy the area between SC and HB sound-wise. Warm, yet snappy.

The one in my tele is the "seymourized" model and often catches the attention of other guitarists.

Frog...the humbucker on mine was ok sounding...nothing to write home about..loved it in split mode...but if i was in full hum mode and hit a pedal it came to life.....

not sure which Lace Sensor you are referring to in my profile...do you mean the chrome blue/gold one?

"not sure which Lace Sensor you are referring to in my profile...do you mean the chrome blue/gold one?" Yes, that is the one and your double HB tele looks to have two of them. Looks to me like they come in several configurations which complicates things. I had a strat plus long ago and it had 3 gold sensors in it but I forget what they sounded like... I want to keep the 5 way switching the way it is so they look like a good option.

twangdoodles, I really like the look of the mini bucker and I lust for a 52 hotrod tele! Do these mini buckers split or does that defeat the purpose?

Apparently the blue/gold lace is a rare bird.... I purchased both on ebay at different times. I initially put together an Esquire , Fender black top body with AS neck. I had it wired so that the first position was the blue, the middle was both in parallel and the 3rd was the gold.....
pretty damn cool it was.

then I found another one on ebay a few months later and converted into the guitar it is today. The second one ended up having a dead blue coil. When I sent it to Lace for repair they asked me "Where did you get this?"...lol..apparently they were not sold to the general public and might have been a pre cursor to the dually lace sensors that are more common

anyway I have it wired with a 5 way switch, so in position 5 I get the blue, pos 4 I get both in parallel and middle position is just the gold.
then the bridge pup is wired in conjunction with a 3 way on-on-on mini switch for a total of 9 different sounds.

and these don't sound anything like the individual lace sensors, these have a bit more character to them...not as sterile sounding... even though it looks like a tele, it has a LP/Strat vibe to it.
Lace makes these now in different configs..like the silver/red but I can't comment on them as I've not heard them..

Lace's web site may have more information on them...but they can make anything you want if you want to pay extra...I had a light blue/blue dually made, for another tele..I think it was 100 bucks plus 25 extra for a custom order....but it doesn't have the chime that the chrome covered blue/gold does.

Some of 'em are 4-wire, some not. Loos like the antiquities and anything labeled vintage are single wire. I have mine set up with a 5-way and is usable.
