I am back in the strat fold with a very inexpensive chinese made Squier strat but could be a decent mod machine (standard body thickness, pretty 3 ply white pearloid pickguard)

I have made a mod to my Epiphone Nighthawk custom reissue which has a tappable HSH layout on a 5 position switch, to turn on the tail pup with a switch that I have hidden on the back side of the guitar.

I would like to make a similar mod to this Squier, but have the neck tone be a master tone, and the middle tone control be the 'switch to bring in the tail pup. So when the 5 position is at the neck position, I dial up the middle tone to get a tele-like neck/bridge combo.

Is this a simple mod or is this just asking for trouble?

Dead easy. And you'll find a wiring diagram on google in five minutes. Search for "strat blender pot mod".

1) Remove whatever wires connect the tone pots to the switch or volume pot (*except* for any ground wires across the back of the pots, you keep those).

2) Connect the middle lug of the neck tone control to the left most lug of the volume pot.

3) Where the bridge pickup connects to the switch, connect that terminal to the middle lug of your middle tone control. Connect the right-most lug of the tone control to the neck pickup switch terminal.

When the back tone pot is on 10, wiring is stock. When it's on 0 the bridge pickup is added to the neck pickup.

(Note: in the diagram I've linked below, the "50's tone mod" is also present, in which the tone control is connected to the middle lug of the volume pot. YMMV.)

Sweet. Time to get the strings off of this thing and go at it.

Took me the better part of the weekend including a fret-end treatment, but I did it. Here's the only oddity: It seems like the tone control only has a workable range of about the lower 25% of the sweep of the pot. The upper 75% doesn't seem to really have much effect.

That said, the Neck+Bridge sounds pretty sweet. Enough so that eventually, I will probably put in a push/pull tone control so that I can use that for a switch, instead of the tone control at 1 to get both pups.

"...a workable range of about the lower 25% of the sweep of the pot."

What kind of pot is it, linear or logarithmic?
If it's a log (audio) is it possibly wired backwards?

"I will probably put in a push/pull tone control so that I can use that for a switch..."

I prefer a mini toggle switch for this. It's much more practical for switching on the fly rather than pulling up a knob.
There's plenty of room for the toggle on a strat route.
You can see mine in the larger pic of the body on my latest build. Between the 5-way and the tone knob.

Which lug of the volume pot is the tone pot connected to? If it's on the middle, put it back to the same lug the output from the switch connects to.

If that fixes the issue, you don't like the 50s tone pot wiring.
If that doesn't fix the issue, something may be amiss. The tone control should work just as it did before.

DrKev, I don't have a switch. I did the tone blender mod per the diagram earlier in the thread. Middle lug on neck tone pot was attached to lug 8 on five position switch and now connected to middle lug on volume pot. Are you suggesting putting it back on position 8 of 5 position switch?

By switch I meant the 5-way switch.

Either to there, yes, or to the 1st/left hand/input lug of the volume pot.

I moved the neck tone wire from middle lug of volume pot to left lug and I still have limited tone control. I wonder if I need a different tone pot.

If it worked well before, it should work now unless you've damaged it with the soldering iron. Recheck your wiring against the schematic, carefully, even the best of us make mistakes.

I'm not sure it worked well before; because of sharp frets, the guitar was nearly unplayable - so I filed the sharp fret ends down and did this re-wire all on the same weekend.

Here's a clip of what it sounds like now moving through the various switch positions then adding in tone blender.
