You aren't kidding. They've gotten too big for their britches for sure. I laughed VERY hard when PT 12 came out a year or two ago at 599 for non-HD, and they touted the ability to freeze a track with FX and automatically hide the previous track as a great new feature. I had been doing that for maybe 6 years or so in Reaper at $60 bucks hahaha.

I have Pro Tools 10, running it in Windows 7. I still can't figure out if I can upgrade without doing the annual subscription. I'm pretty determined to keep this box running as long as I can. I have a issue of principals doing subscription on software.

Yea, I don't do subscription, and only upgrade if it offers something I want.

I'm happy using "old" versions.

Larry, I would stay on 10. New versions may require new PC hardware as well to keep up. You don't have to use a subscription. I didn't. I just paid the $599 out of pocket for non HD. The subscription comes into play for two things: tech support and upgrades.

If you want tech support, you can pay per call or you can pay $99 a year.

If you want to upgrade to the next 1X version, you have to pay $99 a year to get these upgrades. Otherwise, when its time for a new version, it's going to cost $299 to upgrade.

It probably comes out on the wash if every major version is 3 years.

Big studios usually don't upgrade fast. They get a PT rig running like clockwork, then they don't touch it until years pass and they feel new features are worth the hassle. Nothing wrong with staying legacy.

Tom Lord Alge is still on 10 I think.

Yep, I reluctantly migrated to Pro Tools 4 years ago from an old version of Sony Vegas. I found my old version of Sound Forge still fires up in Windows 7 so still use it for post production (trimming front and back, dc offset removal, spectrum analysis, minor normalization tweaks).

I'll be sticking with PT10 as long as I can. But back on topic, I'm having fun revisiting some of my older projects and apply Tape. Its a subtle but effective tool. I seem to favor unit A at 30 ips.

Fantastic!

30 ips is nice and subtle and changes the EQ curve the least - unit A is probably a Studer a800 and very clean unit. Has a nice way of bringing the mix together. I like 15ips on A for a more round and 70s sound.

Depending on the mix, I will push up the highs a little on that setting.

The one major feature lacking here is gang function or grouping. That is really a must for console and Tape emulations. I hope they add it.

I also decided to buy the Abbey Road Brilliance pack. As much as I tried, I couldn't replicate their modeling. The +2 dB on 10k alone makes it worth it for the shimmer of acoustic guitars and high end sparkle on vocals. Who knows, maybe the target is aging guitarists with diminished high end hearing loss, lol.

I had a copy of ProTools 11 on a machine that crapped out on me and had no choice but to go to PT12. Being a student at the time I was able to get a PT12 subscription for $9 a month. In hindsight it was well worth it. Now all of my plugins are kept up to date and I get any new stock plugins when they come out. There are some very good stock plugs in PT12.

As far as tape emulators go, I really like the Waves Abby Road J37 plugin.

Ha! I might have to get them. I have a Softube Console 1 coming, and many of my UAD plugs and of course Softube plugs are controllable with it(in a knob per function manner)

I've yet to use any of the 3 brilliance modules in a subtractive mode. But I like what I hear with just a +2, +4 max bump at 8 or 10k. Like I said, I've tried just matching with the eq in PT, using various q, no cigar. There is some other shaping at play in the lower mids, me thinks.

Those older units and even console eqs to a point can be veryyyyyyyyy soft and wide in their peaking and shelving. Suprisingly so. I put on waves q clone on a couple of my eq's and was surprised to see visually what the curves looked like.

I would try backing the Q down as far as it will go on your digital parametric and use a high shelf boost to see how close you can get, if you haven't tried that already.

However, even then, the Abbey's probably model the phase shifting and distortion etc thats happening... this is why many times I prefer analog modeled EQ to digital ones(Oxford EQ and Fabfilter Pro are both amazing digital eqs, though, with Oxford modeling some of their modes on consoles)

I have PT 12.8 going here, but it only works at 44.1 or 48khz for me and is quite a hog. I use it sometimes but I am fast becoming a Studio One user.

I have downloaded the demo of the Softube Brilliance pack and visually taken screen shots of the 10k curve. You can see the gray is the widest and thats why I like it the most. The green has much more peak.

These curves show nothing of harmonic distortion, fyi.

So running a sine wave through it and analyzing, there seems to be no hamronics generated. So I suppose they chose not to model this part of the EQ.

Put their free saturation knob after it and you have it though!

That is so cool Aaron. I tried to download a demo of Waves clone and had no luck finding it. I need to play with the other units, I've actually been using the green the most.

Hm. Yea you have to use their Waves Central installer and all this stuff and hope that PT will find it.

Glad you dig em. If I had the cash I would pick them up. They even work with console 1.

So I wanted to test how close Q-clone could get to the sound of the Softube plugins. First, I went by ear. Compared the cloned boost on the rack module at 10k +6 on acoustic guitar and went back and forth. The Rack still sounded better to me. More friendly and open. So to see if I was full of it or not I did a null test. Turns out Q-clone cannot clone quite the same curve or sound. Now, it is quite close, but there are still some high frequencies that are different that I heard above the noise floor. To my limited knowledge this must mean one of two things: Q-clone cannot perfectly clone the curve, or there are time-domain non-linearities or even amplitude based that are occurring with the plugins. Since Q-clone is a static snapshot made with a wideband pulse signal, I suppose some things won't be exact. Close, but no cigar. I did my usual "idiot with money" thing and picked it up at Sweetwater since it was on sale for $99 and did the payment plan. They are quite nice sounding.

Yeah, I bought it through Sweetwater, too. Not having luck with downloading Q-clone I tortured a vocal clip over and over with the brilliance plugs compared to the 7 band EQ. I don't have a spectrum analyzer that allows me to overlay multiple curves so I'd run them individually in Sound Forge. Then I'd save the images as PDFs and toggle between the 2 to see the differences. Long story short(er), I could not approximate the results of the Abbey Road plugins and concluded there were some other things at play.

Easy to fall down that bunnyhole, isn't it? 😄

You aren't kidding.

They sound great though, and at $99, a good deal if you ask me.

They sound great! Now if they would just do some of those old compressors from AR...
