I bought a used, mint condition Marshall DSL40C yesterday. I had used this amp to try out my recent Epi ES 335 Pro acquisition and really liked the amp. Thus, it haunted me. (:oD

I tried the DSL40C out before and wasn't impressed. HOWEVER, I now know that running the amp at half power (20 watts) makes all the difference.

Also - I can use the DSL40C with my Marshall 1936 cab by unplugging the internal speaker and connecting the 16 ohm out to the cab (with the power off of course).

Nice score!

I haven't had a Marshall in a few years. And I've never owned a Marshall tube combo. These have haunted me. And there's a nice one on the local CL. Thus far I have abstained from purchase.

HA!
I did the same thing with my Vox. Almost.

Tried out a Tele through a Vox AC15-CC1.
Bought the guitar.
Went home and thought about the amp.
Went back a while later for the amp.
It was sold, BUT they had an AC15-HW1 in its place.
Tried that out and bought it (liked it even better than the CC1 model).

Anyhoo......congrats on the new amp!!

Is this the one with the Creamback speaker? If so, that is an amazing speaker which will only get better with age.
Some of them came with the Vintage 30's but I really like the Creamback speaker, because it gets all the tonal quality of the Greenbacks but slightly mellowed mid-highs. Making for a really nice speaker that works nicely with single coil pups and humbuckers are just a powerhouse.
I thought the Vintage 30's were kind of brittle sounding in an open back combo, where they do their best tone in a closed back cabinet.
Sweetwater has the Creamback speaker in their offerings.
Either way, that amp is a nice score! Have fun and rock out!

Cal-Woody - I'm not sure what speaker is included, the cab has a closed back. I'll have to do some research.

The best Marshall combo I've owned is 70's era a JMP 50 watt 2x12 combo which I used live and in the studio back in the early 80's before moving to a JCM800 50 watt half stack. I've mostly owned Marshall heads and cabs.

According to an Anderton's video, Marshall is discontinuing the DSL40C. Remains to be seen what is replacing it.

The amp sounds great using low gain on the lead channel. I don't care for the high gain sounds on this amp, at least not so far.

The clean channel is nice.

As a follow up on my asking about which speaker your amp came with, most of the specs said it was an Celestion 70/80, which my other guitar player has in his.
It's not a bad choice but I would maybe opt for something different in the future, that is if you are satisfied with the amps performance.
Also, I'm not sure which tubes they used in that model, as most of my Marshall amps have used re-labelled Sovtec's and find their sound a little more brittle sounding. I have been using JJ's in my DSL 100 and retubed my friend's DSL 40 with JJ's EL34's, plus I changed out the preamp tubes with JJ 12AX7's.
The difference is night and day now!
It has a better low end and the mids really bring good complexity to the EQ and tailor nicely into the highs. This helps so much because of the shared EQ, and the distortion channel is really more useable for pushed edge on the clean channel. Sounds like a good overdrive pedal with tube dynamics.
Wow, what a difference a tube change made!
I have a WGS Veteran 30 that's new and wanted to try out in his amp, but he was happy with the results and might get a chance to try it out after he gets over his new found happiness, but I guess I'll have to wait for a while, but I want him to break it in for me. He was hovering over me while I did the tube changes and I didn't get a chance to see the speaker ohm rating. My Veteran 30 is 16 ohms.
At any rate, the tube change was such an improvement over the stock ones and thought I had to mention it here.
Best regards, Woody

Cal-Woody - Thanks the for the info on the difference the tube change made in your DSL 100. I may go in that direction if I decide I'm not getting what I want out of the DSL40C.

I'm still using one of my two Fender 63 Vibroverb RI combos for gigs and band practice. I will bring the DSL40C to practice occasionally (I also use my tweed Blues Jr. NOS, depending on the volume requirements).

One of the reg'lers that attends our jams here shows up with a DSL40 1x12 combo and an SG, and he always has killer tone. I played through it at the last jam and was impressed.

I did tube changes for both amps. The DSL 40 was the one I changed tubes on for my friend, Wednesday night. He picked up this amp about a week ago on EBay. It's about 6-7 years old and didn't even see if it had the 1/2 power switch. My footswitch worked on his amp. It's the 2 button switch and use a 'Y' adapter for channel and reverb. His came with the single switch. I almost got mad at him because he was getting impatient and had to tell him to wait and let me clean the sockets before retubing and barely got the rear panel on before I gave it a try. He's 56 years old and would have thought him to be more like a 10 year old kid. Lol Yeah Boy, it was a little annoying but what a difference these tubes made! The other tubes were new, so, I kept them for any future concerns of failure.
Ok, I'm rambling, but what a nice amp and congrats on your acquisition.
Now I want one! Lol
Later Dude, Woody

Get it.

You know you want it.

Why should other people have a Marshall DSL40C and you don't?
