I am slow to jump on this BOSS KATANA band wagon, but I too have sold off all my tube amps. Got tired of weight, inconsistency in sound from venue to venue due to voltage changes, and mainly tube amp failure and repairs. Cap jobs, cold solder joints, tubes ...

I watched endless Youtube videos... Some good, some a waste of time. I figured I try a KATANA sometime. I saw a local ad of someone selling their KTN50 for $125 so I jumped on it. Heck, a good stomp box will cost you more than that. Also, being a technical geek, I immediately connected it up the computer, updated firmware, and quickly got acquainted with Boss Tone Studio. For those who have a Katana, you are missing most of the "tweaking capability" if you don't use the software.

Long story short, I tried the KTN50 at rehearsal and was impressed. The only downside was no footswitch like the KTN100. So let's say I found a way to pick up the KTN100 and Foot Controller. (Yes, I too was confused at first as the labeling did not match what the FC was suppose to do. Luckily I have a label maker and created my own labels. Since I am using version 3 of the firmware, I have the 2 banks of 4 presets I use for my gigging or recording purposes.

Time will tell if I keep feeling good about the KATANA, but I even stopped using external OD pedals or effects. I don't know why my feeling would change unless the amp proves unreliable, which at this time I see no signs that would be the case.

The only comment to new users out there, you do have to spend time to dial in your sounds. There is a lot of tweaking (which doesn't bother me). You dial it in at home, take it to rehearsal, see what works, go back home and tweak it some more. At this point, I am pretty much done tweaking it unless I need a new sound.

I have set my up with CLEAN, BLUES, ROCK, LEAD on bank 1 and CLEAN WITH CHORUS, SRV, ROCK2, 80's ROCK and panel to suit what I need that night.

I also spent time on forums, downloaded other examples, most were too harsh sounding, but I feel like I have built some usable patches for my own needs.

Have fun with your Katana. It's much more than a practice amp.

I've had the Artist for nearly a month and it is beyond all expectations. Too much fun and I have usable sounds that rival anything I've ever played through.

Got the foot switch and the Boss volume/expression pedal. This is really a dream amp.

Anybody having a 'Katana Connection Failure' error from the Katana to Windows in Tone Studio? I also found the Katana wasn't appearing as an input option in Reaper. The problem is a recent Windows update, and the fix from the Roland Zendesk website is to go to Settings- Privacy- Microphone- and enable Allow Apps To Access Your Microphone. There's a list on the right of individual apps you can deny access to if you want. Unplug USB, switch off Tone Studio, re-plug USB, restart Tone Studio. Reaper didn't need a restart.

I'm not sure if this will help, but from the Boss Tone Studio website you have to download the Windows driver then the Tone Studio will work.
Give that a try. Woody

I don't know if this has been asked yet but can you use the GA-FC controller with the 50? I don't need 100 watts, we mic everything, but I want the versatility of using the controller for gigging. I'm just about sold on replacing my Mustang III v2 with this. I want to keep it small and light so the 50 wins in that respect. Sorry if this has been discussed.

No, it can't. You have to go to the Katana 100 to use the GA-FC in order to use the footcontroller.
Your only option is to get the footswitch to change channels or the expression pedal to control volume or effects.

Gaukdawg, this one was recommended for the version 2 Katana 50.

I might just have to get the 100 then. Or the Artist. I like the idea of the Nextone but I don't want to have to carry a big pedalboard along with the amp. I use the internal effects with the Mustang and found that if you just spend a little time tweaking you can get pretty decent sounds.

@Eddie5323: On the "Panel button", what does that do?
When I accidently tapped it, it turned on a 'Boost' and thought, Cool, I've got a distortion boost for soloing! Well, is this button assignable for 'SOLO'ing' or was that just a happy little accident?
By the way, it was LOUD and more than expected/needed, but if I can dedicate this button to use it as a clean boost or some type of boost when wanted, that would be really nice for those moments when you want to push your solo/lead work volume up.
I'm still tweaking some settings but am using just the first bank so far, but like you, I want to setup the next bank for my basic channels with the added effects. And did you find there was any delay when switching from one bank to the other??
Because when you want to access those sounds on the fly and switch back, I don't want to be pondering when it will kick in and have just be more fluid in feel....
My Thanks and Appreciation in advance, Woody

As a follow up to my last question, I think that the Panel button switches the banks over to the next set of presets. So the boost I thought I was getting is probably the first channel on second bank, or Bank 2/ channel #1. Would I be right on this guess?
Thanks to anyone who can answer this, Woody

Woody, on the 50, Panel selects the manual control panel, so no Channels are involved.

Also, the Panel button is used to switch banks. To switch between banks on any particular channel, hold down the Channel button and press Panel for one second. It flashes slowly when you are in bank 2.

At least that's how it is on the 50; hope this is relevant to the Artist!

I'm not sure if this is how it works but need to open the book and do some research. I'm not very sauvy on this digital stuff and need a lot of hand-holding to make it make sense, as I've only had digital processor type of effect units and programmed those but never an entire amp and effects together or just create amp settings/styles!!!
Yeah, I'm kinda lost here but have created some good amp sounds and will more than likely clone those to the other banks and add effects to them, to create some sort of basic sense of what it is that I would want next when playing our song sets.
One thing that has really got me bugged is that I have done all the updates and can no longer use the FxFloorboard software, even though the creator has done updates stating that they should work with the newer version of the Boss software. Well, when you try to connect to the FxFloorboard software, it doesn't recognize the amp and am dead in the water there!!! He has developed some really great software and before I had done these updates I could get some really nice amp models and could configure the EQ/effects in a sensible manner. Maybe there is a way to reset the amp back to the Version 2 software and take advantage of that site again!
On another note, once you do the update, the amp will only go back to the basic sounds that were used and does not revert to the original shipped version of the software installed. I think that Boss may have a way to reprogram the amp back to the Version 2 software, and if so, I may do just that!!!
The Version 3 software adds a couple of effects and with the added update they offer on the Version 3 software, they fixed some glitches, but so far I am attracted to the FxFloorboard software and think that this is more appealing to me and the use of the FxFloorboard software made the amp super flexible and dynamic!
A little buyer's remorse from performing the update.....
So, until I get familiar with the Boss Tone Studio and can program what I have, I'll still be looking into the idea of resetting the system back to the original software, Version 2....
I guess this may be considered a PSA on updating your Katana's!!
Yes, I'm still needing to learn how to program this amp and will keep watching/listening to all that is offered here.
My Thanks to all whom have responded, Woody

Woody, I do recall there is a factory reset procedure, don't know if V2 software is still available though.
