FDP Forum / Fender Guitars: Telecasters / How to lighten the butterscotch blonde finish on my 52 RI?

I have a 2006 "Thinskin" 52 RI Tele from Wildwood which is an absolute beast! Love everything about it but I think that Butterscotch is a bit too Kraft American cheese color. I seriously love this guitar but ever time I look at it reminds me of Cheetos!

Is there a way I can lighten the color of this butterscotch to a more faded blonde than this pumpkin cheetos color? Expose to sunlight? Any ideas?

I agree that Fender has gone a little overboard with that color, especially in later years. I call that shade "radioactive mango".

It should be possible to do a refin to convert it to more of a white blonde, but it would be challenging, even for a pro.

My advice is: That's a classic guitar. Don't mess with it. You'll be sorry later.

It's Nitrocellulose finish. If I were to take the neck off and the pickguard and electronics off it and just get the bare body exposed to mid-day sun about an hour or so for a month would that harm the body and get the color to fade to lighter blonde?

It probably won't change much, because most modern finishes have UV inhibitors.

And even if it did fade that way, it would appear artificial because there'd be no masking caused by the parts being on the body as it faded.

Your best bet is to find a finished body that you like, and swap all the parts over. Sell the original body to recoup some of your costs.

Seems to me exposure to sunlight would have the opposite effect you want.
