I'm up in Micco. Storm shouldn't make it here until Monday. Sposed to be down to Cat 1 or TS by then, too soon to tell.

Staying with friends a little further inland in a more substantial house for a couple of nights starting tomorrow.

I keep in touch with BB on FB. He is sheltering-in-place.

Tomorrow is when it hits him, but should be a Cat 3 or 4 by then.

Still....

Storm shutters are up. We have plenty of food and bottled water. Irma is due to arrive Saturday night here in Port Charlotte.

Got a late start from being out of state and having to get flight changed to get back, but we've got our shutters up, gas for the generator and cars and ready to ride this one out. We're better equipped now than we were then since we have shutters.

Not worried about survival, but really dreading going through the home repairs, insurance claim issues, etc.

Horse country checking in south of Ocala. Mostly clear with some high level clouds and a secondary fast moving layer. Crows cawing, wind chimes tinkling...kinda eerie.

I may have told this story here...maybe not, so:

I grew up in the Cocoa Beach area. Hurricane David was inbound, and I decided to stay in place because it was looking like the eye was going to remain well-offshore. So I was driving my truck southbound on Merritt Island late in the evening, with winds steady around 40 knots. I was one of very few vehicles on the road, and there was tree litter and other stuff blowing around, so I was moving about 20mph.

In my headlights I saw something moving across the road from the left side (east) to the right (west). It was hard to make out what it was.

I came to a stop and there in my headlights was a large blue crab about 10" across, dragging a black mullet (fish type, for
you Yanquis) that was at least 12" long.

I immediately started to regret my decision to stay in place because here was a dumb crab, with a week's worth of provisions under one arm, heading west toward high ground.

And he was way smarter about the weather than I was.

I'm about as safe as you can be in Florida concerning this storm. I put a few paragraphs in the Irma thread. I expect to be off line and gone primitive something Monday morning.

I keep the property pretty clean, clutter free. I have a couple of canoes I'll put in the workshop along with the rag topped Jeep today. I'll have about 17 gallons of spring water in three water plastics (cans?) along with a good bit of bottled water, and a couple bathtubs full for the toilet. If I'm out of power for any lenght of time, I'll have to pull the carberator off the generator and clean it up. Actuallly I'll just order an new carb from Amazon today, it'll be here before I need it. The only thing I need electricity for is water and the refrigerator.

All my kerosene lanterns are full, well, not all of them, that would just be crazy, but 4 of the Aladdins and as many Dietz plus 5 gallons of kerosene or so on hand. Maybe 10 days of food, though their are chickens and cattle right down the road, about 2 miles to the butcher shop and all the neighbors gardens have summer stuff in them. I also have about 25 watts of solar panels to keep a charge on USB battery sources and devices.

The worst case is Irma goes west into the gulf and rebuilds then heads east but prevailing stearing still indicates an Northwest track.

"I grew up in the Cocoa Beach area."

Didja ride any waves back then, Mr. Goo? I surfed around Cocoa Beach, Patrick AFB, Sebastian Inlet area very briefly back about 1980.

Not a lot of altitude in that region: Hope y'all come out of all this OK. Godspeed.

Tip for fellow Floridians:

If your house gets hit by a dolphin, do not go outside to see if it's OK. That's how the hurricane tricks you to go outside!
