Thanks, guys - I'll start shopping. K4, my last yellow top Optima croaked at 2 years and they refused to warranty it because of my radios and lights. I'll never buy another from them, they were real jerks.

IF Costco sells a batteryt hat fits my vehicles (they don't sell for two of them), that's where I go.

We're Sam's instead of Costco (the fiancé is a vendor), but their battery is only a few bucks cheaper than others.

Don't forget Auto Club. Their battery is actually an Interstate.

Menards (localish big box hardware store) had a rebate going through today, plus I had a coupon. I was able to get an Exide for $80.

I found the last owner had the wrong battery in there - it was the right one for an older Miata, not my later one. The new battery has a bit more capacity.

My first-gen Miata (1990) required a marine gel battery, as I recall.

Something to do with being in the non-ventilated trunk.

I usually do Costco, but recently I noticed the battery display was removed from the warehouse. Could be they moved it to the tire service area though.

Yeah, Miata's require a gel battery. My '91 has gone through a couple over the years, but they seem to last 5-7 years. No deals as I recall. Check Moss and some of the other online Miata vendors. Don't skimp ( ask me how I know!).

NCs don't require gel batteries - that was a NA and possibly NB thing because the battery is in the trunk. The NC has it under the hood.

As I understand, the Optima is an AGM battery which is not the same as a gel battery.

I'm also in the market for a new battery and Optima used to be one of the primo's for off roading -- so I was going to spring for one of them.

Then I started looking at reviews -- maybe not.

I was going to get it at Autozone -- I assume they honor the warranty directly without getting the manufacturer involved. I've brought back a number of things under warranty and they've never given me a problem.

I need to run that by them before I pull the trigger.

Between the weather events of late and the fact winter is coming, I think the best deals are about now.

Get cracking!

I go to a parts store, buy the highest CCA battery that will fit. I replace when the warranty is up. I haven't had a battery die on me in 34 years.

The yellow top is a deep cycle battery, surprising they would not warranty it for a radio and lights.

I use the red top in all my vehicles, never had an issue.

For deep cycle I use Trojan's.

There are other manufacturers of AGM or Gell cell batteries, still better than a sealed flooded battery.

Cost vs lifespan of the battery just doesn't seem worth it to me.
I can buy two standard batteries for the cost of a glassmat

I've seen many Optima batteries replaced at work at the three to four year point. That isn't better than my last factory Toyota battery. I kept that one for six years before I replaced it

I didn't want to go crazy with the battery here, the Miata is a toy that stays on a float charger when it's not on the road. The battery that was in it when I bought it two years ago was pretty old, plus a few times the charger was inadvertently unplugged which resulted in a totally flat battery. I keep a portable jumpstarter in the trunk when I'm using it, so an everyday battery seemed most appropriate.

If we're really going to FDP this topic properly I think you need to consider a lithium iron battery for your Miata.

I recently put one in my Harley and it turns over much quicker now, removing the heavy duty starter from my to-do list.

More cranking amps, less weight, lasts longer. Bit pricier but you cannot have everything!

This should do it

Holy crap! I'd just be worried it would grenade during charging.
