I spent a couple of years working on my rockabilly chops, only to notice that jazz guitar playing kept creeping in.
The jazz oriented songs I play are original compositions, but I'm also going to learn a few "covers" such as Miles Davis' "So What." I basically know George Benson's "Breezin'" but need to work it out for one guitar.
Parents tell your children, STAY AWAY from that damn rockabilly! (;oD
ps - I don't consider myself a legitimate jazz musician, but I'm good enough to play the jazz music I write.

Good observation. Another genre that was surprisingly jazzy for its time was Western Swing as played by Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys. Check out Eldon Shamblin's guitar break at 1:00, and the trumpet solo that follows.
Charlie Christian credited Shamblin as one of his major influences.

Te 52 - That's definitely true about western swing. That guitar solo in the clip is pure jazz.

I am a jazz practicer and player and I made a side step there from the blues. However, I have seen all the similarities in Rockabilly and Western Swing and love those styles just as much. It's just plain hot music.

Don't forget West Coast/Jump blues. Igor Prado is a favorite, solos chock full of quotes from Charlies' Parker & Christian.

Why do I keep fixing things that work?Sep 22nd, 2017 06:34 PM Edit Profile
The main reason I like jazz is the way you learn how to use the chords and passing phrases to enhance your rythym playing. It adds so much support for a guitarist/band and gives a lot of emphasis to the entire song.
It makes you sound and feel so accomplished and fills in all the gaps.

I listened to Pat Metheny's debut album over the weekend and found it interesting that he mostly played chord fragments, along with the lead parts.

Cal... I am with you. The comping is amazing.
This book is nothing but that style of comping.
It has been great for me. Even just learning the embellished 2-5-1s that he does are worth it alone IMO. That beautiful melodic/voice leading movement that takes place over just a 2-5-1 vs chunking away on a low voiced 2 for four beats, then 5 chord etc... I love it.

Try playing "Stray Cat Strut" by The Stray Cats. Brian Setzer throws in a lotta jaazy chords and solos on this seemingly Rockabilly sounding tune.

Deep - That's a good example.
Setzer's guitar playing is so good its down right frightening. I love the two live Rockabilly Riot albums I have. The fact that he's singing while playing a lot of this jazzy stuff makes it even more impressive.
