This Tele-o-copy is a challenge. It has morphed (in my mind) a few times now.

A rendition of the Tele will be done tomorrow. Not sure if it’s the final version. But it should be fun.

It's done. I still have to do a proper setup, but other than that it makes noise.

Here's a pic with its brothers.

It’s gonna stay this way. Love the OD tone from that bridge setup.

Those are StewMac Golden Age pickups. They had a sale on them last month and I bought pickups for this and the green Stratty.

Yep. It’s a righty bridge.

It is a pretty great OD tone. More snotty and snarly than a typical Tele.

Snarly and Tele go together like peas and carrots.

Thanks!

I’m going to spend some quality time on these guitars later today. I am super pleased with the results in both cases. And the Tele with the flipped bridge pickup is such a great voice! I wish I would have discovered this years ago.

New experiences with this set of mod guitars:

Neck shims from StewMac. *That* is the way to shim a neck! I have another guitar with a pick for a shim installed. I’m going to change that one too. I ordered a few of these because I knew I had one other guitar that is shimmed.

Routing pickup cavities. I’ve done mild carves in the past. I bought a Rigid laminate router (palm router) and did an extensive rout of the Green Meany. It went from 3 single coil routs to two large routs to accommodate the humbuckers. And I had to rout the bridge cavity on the Jimi Tele for the righty-slant bridge pickup. I did a decent job of it. It wasn’t art. But they were respectable looking.

I changed the cover a the Tele neck pickup. StewMac doesn’t sell that pickup with a gold cover. Hey! I didn’t screw up the pickup!

Other than the above this round of mods was a dusting off of my skills. I hadn’t done this sort of work in years. The last guitar I built was in 2014 - my Warmoth Strat.

I have a Warmoth neck inbound and I think I’m going to order a body for it later this year. Not sure what, yet. 25.5” scale is all I know. I also might try the neck on this Tele. We’ll see when it gets here. If I do that and it works and like it enough to leave it there will be a neck sent your way, Rocky. :-)

I thought I was going to mod these with existing parts from my accumulation. But I got carried away with ideas and ended up going with gold hardware. I’m glad I did.

Thanks for this opportunity Mike!

Thanks for the GAS, Eric. Now I want to build a Tele. If only I had $1000 lying around. Maybe the Tele neck could be the impetus. :oD

Question: Why the neck shims? Are they for alignment side-to-side? Filling a gap?

I can’t get to them from my phone. Search them on the StewMac site.

Neck angle. They sit in the neck pocket between the body and neck.

Sorry - didn't read your post in its entirety.

The neck needed to be tipped back a smidgen to facilitate lower action.

Tonight I actually added a second - a .25 degree shim - to the .5 degree already in the neck pocket. saddles at a reasonable height and really nice action.

The Tele required no shim. The Strat needed help. Oddly enough I remember that it seems like every one of these SX Strats I’ve had needed one. I don’t remember never needing one the a SX Tele.

I had a SX Tele just like this one years ago. I actually modded it and sold it and did ok on that deal.
