Snail mail paper statement from Franklin Templeton arrived today. The account is a mix of two funds. Combined the year's increase is 24.33%. The Franklin Growth Fund slice is up 26.78%, the Franklin Small-Mid Cap Growth Fund slice up 21.53%.

Maybe interesting: In nominal dollar terms this year's increase amount is over twice the entire original investment, made in the mid 80s, into a low return, boring, but steady Ginnie Mae fund.

Also maybe interesting, the only time I ever tried to "time the market" was in November 2001, in a stock market trough, where I moved the above mentioned account from the Ginnie Mae I started with to a 50-50 split of the current equities funds. This was the biggest such move I ever made and it is not my current style to do such a thing today.

There were some tough times after that recession but I got through with my 1999 USA '62 reissue Strat.

Most of my other retirement stuff is in the Total Market Index fund with Vanguard, I expect that performance to be around 20% or so when that comes in.

Thanks for your indulgence, that fund has a certain sentimental affect on me. **sniff**

I've been predicting a 20% correction for the past three years. One of these years I'm going to be right..........

"I've been predicting a 20% correction "

I could stomach 50%, assumption that ten years from now there is a 98% chance I have as much as I do today. 50% chance it will be double in ten.

I work at an insurance company, so I appreciate that in ten years I may not be around at all. :) 57 YO today.

Sorry for the confusion, it wasn't my BD. :) It's how old I am today too. Even though it's tomorrow now. Or something.

Flock of geese sighted flying over Wall Street. The Dow, with its finger on the pulse of the economy, plunges 12 percent.

"There was perceived risk that geese would no longer be laying golden eggs, explained Donald Davies of Fortune Magazine, leading to panicked selling in hedge funds and mortgage securities.
Fear has a huge impact on the market," he added.

Just updated my account ledger for the week.

Retirement accounts are up 2% for the first five days of 2018. ;)

As much as that is a very short slice of time ... It's still a great start to the new year by any measure. :)

My Vanguard statement in today. 18.9% for 2017, Total Stock Market Fund.

Edited to add, with reinvested dividends up about 21%.

A couple more funds will trickle in. Most off the retirement is in the above.

There will be a correction soon enough but the market is still the only game in town (unless you want to stick to CDs and other fixed income investments). I'm not as invested in stocks as I once was but it's more of a capital preservation thing for me at this stage of life so we're only maybe a third invested in stocks currently. However, we also have real estate and other investments as part of our diversification. That said, It's been nice this past year to see our stock portfolio continue to head north.

Chris, you are a wise and well planned man. You are also very tolerant and cool.

"There will be a correction soon enough"

Sadly this is true but it sure is fun while it lasts.

I'm thinking the first sign of a market correction will occur in the home market.
