Too bad for the employees. I've known folks who work there and none where happy but it was a job none the less.

The internet is kicking retails butt. If the 260 number is correct that's 40% of their stores. Yikes!

Amazon is doing to Walmart what Walmart has been doing to other stores for years.

Life goes on.

Not being into social media, I'm not into "liking" posts. But if I did, I would "like" NoSoapRadio's post just above.

Fortunately the two Sam's near me are not on the list. I wouldn't care if I had a Costco nearby but I don't.

I have little use for Walmart but I'm not sure I could live in a place without a Costco!

Ours didn't make the list - which is a relief.

No Costco in town. Sam's is it. And we like Sam's for some stuff.

From the article Chris linked;

"Ten of the closed stores will be turned into e-commerce distribution centers."

This is going on *a lot* across the country. New distribution centers being built and other building being convert to dist. centers.

I've seen some massive DCs going up or recently opened in major cities across the country over the last two years.

It's the shift to eCommerce.

Don't forget to click the Amazon link above. :-)

Ever wonder why Costco doesn't have signage hanging from the ceiling to help guide you to what you're looking for?

It forces customers to wander a bit more and see other stuff they're not there to buy.

It's also why they occasionally shuffle the departments around--because over time, customers learn where everything is.

You nailed it, Peeg. That's the Costco modus operandi.

Well, I'm glad our Sam's isn't closing. Yet.

We're losing our K-Mart in April.

You still HAVE a K-Mart?

I'd assumed they were all pretty much gone, like Radio Shack.

A Sam's Club opened in Fall River, MA, several years ago, but didn't last long. They didn't realize that people who live on the second floor of a triple decker tenement probably don't have the space to store a gross of paper towels and they also don't have the car needed to get them.

The city did, however, just get a vast Amazon distribution center.

I was a member for a year. Seems like a good idea , but buying in mass quantities doesnt benefit single people and small families.

LOL, not EVERYTHING at Sam's (or Costco) is sold by the case. We buy all kinds of single item stuff there.

revmike, we still have a K-Mart here too but we are losing two of the four anchor stores at our local mall - Sears and Macy's. There's also a Shopko and JC Penney's but how much longer will they last in a mall these days?

Yeah, me too MJB. I'm a Costco shopper. I typically buy meat in larger quantities just so I have it in the freezer (Yep, I have a Food Saver) Everything else seems to be in fairly reasonable sizes for the most part or is non-perishable and lasts forever.

The city of San Bernardino is nearby. Huge Amazon distribution centers there. I have a few customers in the area who say it difficult to find employees there because Amazon owns that market too.

Yeah, both Costco and Sam’s Club moved away from having everything in big ass packages years ago. Now, you have to buy three large but still fairly normal items in a pack instead of one huge item. Except for TB and paper towels.
