A friend's brother in law got some funk last week. Healthy one week, then sick, sepsis, coma, death. All in a week.

Been there already.

Took ten days to run it's course then another three weeks to completely clear out.

My doctor gave me a flu shot back in late October.

And then about 2 weeks ago he told me that everybody got the wrong vaccine this year. I guess the medical experts guessed wrong.

I heard on the news that 1600 people in Colorado have been hospitalized so far this season with bad flu.

I got the flu shot, but I'm not depending on it working. So I improvised a HAZMAT suit for the office.

Get well, brother!!!

Man, got your message a bit late. Had the flu in early December. 2 weeks of feeling like crap, and another month of feeling slightly off. Next year, flu shot in October for sure!

I got the flu shot and the pneumonia Prevnar 13 shot a couple of weeks later. I caught a cold or something last month and have not totally got rid of it.

The pastor of my SIL's church sent out a PSA about the flu, encouraging fist bumps instead of handshakes and hugs.

Here in Louisiana is one of the worst flu epidemics in the country.

They guessed wrong on the flu shot.

Reason why I don't get one. The people who did got it for nothing.

I got a yellow fever shot right before Christmas.

I hope IT was the right one because I'm gonna need it.

I've heard this year's vaccine is only a little effective with the strain that's going around but I've gotten a flu shot every year since 1995 (after being sick with flu for three weeks at the end of 1994). So far, I haven't had the flu since. At my age, I'll risk getting the flu vaccine as I'm convinced it works for most most of the time.

Bad here is SoCal. Several of the nursing care facilities where I see patients are locked and under quarantine. ER’s have patients on guerneys in multiple hallways with hours long waits for rooms; many treated just in hallways.

I had a procedure done and ended up in the ER that night. The place was packed with people who had the flu. The ER nurses were putting masks on everyone. I asked and was told the vaccine this year is 0% effective on the strain going around. Yes they were verifying the flu with blood tests.

So I look at it like playing the lottery. You might win, but odds are against you.

I had the flu once many years ago, and I never get the shot. If they could say the shot is 90% or better effective, I'd get one. Reality is they guess which strain will be the one, and make a vaccine for it. They should wait till it starts, then make a vaccine.

"So I look at it like playing the lottery. You might win, but odds are against you."

Except that it is generally 50% effective. So, if you had a 30% chance of winning $100,000,000 you wouldn't buy a $2 ticket? Each to his own but I look at the flu shot as a hedge against the flu. With my heart disease the flu could kill me. I would also feel real bad if I passed the flu on to my grandkids. Ever seen a 2 year old with the flu? I'm going to take measures to prevent it including hand washing, avoiding crowds, getting the flu shot yearly. I'm also due for the pneumonia vaccine net year. Got the shingles vaccine when I turned 60. None of those are 100% effective either.

It's just a choice. I do not get sick easily, as I get older that may change, and so would my choice.

What I am susceptible to is bronchitis. If they had a vaccine for that...

EDIT

I also wonder about the monetary aspect of it. Every pharmacy and clinic has huge banners that scream

"Get your FREE flu shot"

Well nothing is free. Where is the money coming from?

Reminds me of the old west and snake oil peddlers.

Step right up and get your tonic. It cures everything from......

The flu definitely sucks this year. We had 9 patients test positive for influenza A in the first half of my shift yesterday alone.

I am required to get the flu vaccine and in years like this where it is estimated to be 10-15% effective it's kind of annoying but understandable from an epidemiological perspective..

Not quite, K4. Taking steps to prevent infection also helps the people around you. Check out "herd immunity."

You're right, every year's vaccine is a guess. Maybe they get it right, maybe not. But still, get the shot. You're not only protecting yourself, you're protecting more vulnerable people in your community.
