Tronical (the makers of the ill-fated "robotuners" introduced into Gibson's line in 2015 and then dropped like a hot potato) is suing Gibson for $50 million

for breach of contract.

Kind of poetic justice for old Henry

They're solid product, just the adoption and rollout was ill-advised at best. Given Gibson's current problems, I'm glad to see they weren't bought up in the spree of acquisitions.

I agree. If they had been properly rolled out by careful preparation of the market, I think their reception would've been far better--and we wouldn't be seeing all the hatred these days.

They are useful for many players, and the engineering and quality of the parts is extremely good.

Gibson blundered by slapping them on most of their stuff and throwing it against the wall, hoping it would stick.

The other thing, and this is one that was stupid on their part - the second generation tuners....were improved in design and have standard vintage-type shafts. No funky string retainers, etc - so they "look" normal to the people who care about such things, and don't have an extra piece to lose.

"Gibson blundered by slapping them on most of their stuff and throwing it against the wall, hoping it would stick."

They should have been an option or dealer installed add-on.

But the increased neck size and weird adjustable nut made these guitars unplayable for my taste...and I have 11 Les Pauls!

Henry is still an Idiot

What was the weird adjustable nut? My SG ‘50s Trib doesn’t have this and it sports the robo-tuners.

2016 for the Gen 2s, if it's a "Mini-E Tune" it's Gen 1.

Can update the guts and processing to the Gen2 for $60ish or less IIRC.

The zero fret I was skeptical of as well, and well, the brass ones were not ready for prime time.

The titaniums, however, work very, very well and the robotuners don't eat them for lunch. I have them on two of my 2016s.

To me it is a complex solution to a simple problem.

I use 3 tunings for my gigs and bring 4 guitars, problem solved!

The better solution is include a built in digital tuner for every guitar, a built in Snark if you will.

They make 'em for acoustic guitars; no mods required.

The least obtrusive is the PWCT15 sound hole tuner by D'addario/Planet Waves.

I have one in each of my acoustics and they work great.

As a geezer I put robotuners in the top three most colossal failures in modern history along with New COKE and Communism.

I think we shipped all the New Coke to the USSR. That’s what tipped communism over.

I like zero frets. The all-metal one in the earlier link looks really ugly. I guess it does allow one to put a zero-fret nut on a fingerboard that does not have enough length to actually insert a fret.

Think about it.

1. New Coke gone.

B. USSR collapsed right after.
