FDP Forum / Fender Amps: 1985 - Current / 68 Modified Deluxe....compressed?????

OK, I have always been a big Fender Amp Fan. But I have always in the past either owned either a Blues Jr. or a Hot Rod Deluxe.

Someone talked me into upgrading to a Modified 68 Deluxe reissue.

I am not sure if this is just the amps design, or the fact that I have never owned an amp with a Tube rectifier.(or a combination of both).

But would there possibly be just a biasing adjustment that would make this sound not so "Compressed". I was entertaining putting in a solid state rectifier until an amp giuy said that you can't just stick in one of these solid state retrievers...on top of a biasing some caps would have to be changed to compensate for a voltage change.....Just wondering if I need to put it up for sale and go back to a hot rod deluxe?

It won't have the headroom of the HRD, 6V6 tubes.

That's why I keep the HRD around - if I want tubes and Fender, I want 6L6.

There is a huge difference between the HRD and the '68 Custom. Trying to get the same volume out of the '68 the thing will be way beyond any type of clean headroom. Part of this may be the speaker Fender puts in. I like a Jensen C12N or a C-Rex in these. I find all the DRs a bit fizzy and bright. They however don't like the bass control cranked up much at volume IMO. Maybe too much bass dialed in my be adding to the compressed sound.

As Rob says the 6V6 tubes aren't for everyone. I am in this camp. All of my BF Fenders or Fender clones are 6L6 powered.

The JJ 6V6 is structurally more like a 6L6. A set of those in the amp (bias set, of course) might move it towards your ideal.

will 6L6 go in these or do the tube sockets have to be replaced besides the biasing?
