After owning a few Gretsch's, including very expensive MIJ Silver Jet, and trying out numerous hollow body models (6120, G5420, Chet Atkins, Reverend Horton Heat, etc.), they were all bested by an Epiphone Swingster, as far as playability and staying tune goes using the Bigsby.

Who knew? I certainly did not.

The Swingster "may" need TV Jones Filtertrones to sound more twangy, but at least the one I bought this week is amazing in all other respects. And the finish is orange! (:oD

Ooh, Sweetwater has them in "White Royale", classy looking. Thanks for the tip. I've had a hankering for a Gretsch 5420T in Aspen Green, but this could be a candidate.

I find Gretsch's difficult to play for lead guitar work. If I only played Gretsch's, I'm sure I'd adapt and it wouldn't bother me.

However, I mostly play Strats that, with my setup, play very smooth and easy.

Epi's midrange or higher stuff is absolutely killing these days.

I will probably revert to buying them because, well, Gibson discontinued my babies and I already have two.

Some things to keep in mind if you're interested in a Swingster Emperor:

(1) You have to take the Bigsby arm off to fit the guitar in a case. Putting the arm on or off requires the use of an Allen wrench.

(2) Both pickups split using pop up tone knobs.

That's a real looker!

FWIW, I paid $400 used from my Gretsch Streamliner (SHB) with a case and it's getting more play time than my other guitars. The previous owner must've had it set up professionally because it's a player.

Very nice!

I bought a Gretsch G5420 in white because it looked great. Unfortunately, it didn't play great so I took it back.

Why do I keep fixing things that work?

Epiphone is also doing a limited run of the ES295 with Gibson P-90's! It has the right pickups and pinned the bridge, along with the Bigsby tremolo. Now that's exciting news to me!
It needs No Mods and would also be a dream to own.

Question - Does Epiphone really have a Custom Shop? I own two Epi's, including the Swingster and they have a CS thing on the back of the headstock.

"Custom Shop? That's just the sign the manager Kim Dong Song placed on the door as a joke. He's a big kidder." (;oD

I think the Epi Custom Shop is the guy who applies the decals to the back of the headstock.

But only the Custom Shop decal.
