I have a Mahalo Katy 66 amp, a 1x12 combo with a Warehouse ET-90 speaker. 2 KT-66 power tubes. 100% hand wired. The 50 watt sucker will peel paint from walls. Like a Marshall on ‘roids! Great pedal amp at lower volumes but really shines if you have somewhere you can turn it up. I bought it because I got a smokin’ hot deal on it. $800 for a amp that usually went for $26-$2800. I have yet to use it for anything and I’ve had it for two years. About 60 lbs if I remember right. Totally impractical for me but as I mentioned, a smoking hot deal! Anyone else have an amp using KT-66 glass?

Mahalo baby!

I have a Fender Bantam bass amp that I was running 2 KT66 tubes in. It came with KT66's and a EV 15" speaker. Clean and Loud, but not the kind of clean like a Twin Reverb. I'm now running Tung-sol 6L6-G (big glass like KT's)which is sort of in between the current draws of KT66 and a 6L6GC. I don't get to play it cranked up, it's a bit much

Since I'm on a Dr. Z kick today, I've always been intrigued by this one.

I have a Marshall JCM 2203KK (Kerry King) with a quartet of KT-88s. It's like KT-66, but it goes to 88!

I’m still going through the process of selecting my next build. About 10 years ago I built a JTM45 head for a friend. I still remember the first time I played through it. I’m really leaning that way.

Add a power scaling feature for home playing and you'll have a KILLER rig.

I did try a Gold Lion KT66 in my Jet City Custom 5/2. It did the KT66 thing and was my favorite output tube in the amp, but I had to pull the chassis to install the tube. It only clears the top of the cab by .25”. So I ended up with a big-bottle 6L6 in there instead.

Edit: "Gold"

My Mahalo came with JJ KT-66 and I've had no reason to change them yet. When I do, Golden Lions will be my probable choice. Unless I find a nice set of NOS KT-66's.

I shudder to think was a NOS set would cost these days.

One nice thing about my Katy 66 is it has a switch to select 4-8-16 ohms. I have an old Bandmaster closed back cabinet with 2 12" Greenbacks wired for 4 ohms for a 67 Bandmaster head. All it takes is a cable out to the cabinet, disconnect the combo speaker and switch to 4 ohms to get KT-66/Greenback goodness! I don't dare dime it but you can push them pretty hard!

I miss the JTM45 sound and feel. Nothing quite like it.

Nice amp, jhawker.

I have a Marshall Vintage Modern 50 watt combo KT66 amp. Simply an awesome sounding amp and different from everything else in my collection. Apparently based on a JTM45 circuit.

This thread motivated me to mod my Jet City 5/2 head for the Gold Lion KT66 I bought for it.

The tube was too tall. And the tube, once wrestled into place, came very close to the top of the cabinet.

I used a hole saw (2 3/8") to bore a hole over the tube. I epoxied a metal desk metal grommet into the hole to dress it up.

The amp sports a pair of NOS 5751s to tame the gain and, now, a big 'ol KT66. In the mid boost mode it has that great big smooth mids-forward tone you get from a KT66. IN general it moves the amp somewhere between an EL34 and a 6L6 tone, if that makes sense.

When swapping these different power tubes, make sure that:

1) All connections are correct. The EL34 has different connections on a couple of pins that are different from the 6L6.

2) Make sure that your amp innards (power transformer) can account for differences in heater current.
If I recall correctly the EL34 takes quite a bit more than the 6L6 does.

I contacted Jet City to ask about using the KT66. They said it was fine.
