As a geezer I still get surprised at how bright and clear tele neck pups are, not a bad thing btw.
Back in my day they were dark and most players loved to hate them. Just curious when Fender ditched the brass cover. I gonna guess 70's but don't have a clue.

Fender dropped the "dark circuit" in 1967.
Are you sure that wasn't what you were hearing?

Not sure but I remember chrome plated brass covers that also darkened the pup.

Lot of it has to do with the cover material and the amount of potting/wax.
Currently, I think Fender has got this spot on for my tastes. With both their OV and PV64s sets.. nickel/chrome cover, enamel coated wire and a light potting.
Both sets the neck pup are very musical hence practical. OV w/A3 are a little rounder not as bright at the PV64s w/A5s which are a little sharper and brighter.
The neck pup with a lot of Boutique pups that I've tried has always been too dark for me. Too miss matched from the bridge.
Not these... Same goes for a set of Custom shop Texas Specials.. very balanced.
hence why I think Fender still makes the best Telecaster pickups on the market.
The OVs and the PV64s really won me over (not just because of the price.. but because of the performance)

That's a good question. Really not sure when they went away from the brass. They used that material at least until the 70s maybe beyond until the Dan Smith era.
Most people certainly prefer the nickel silver cover for the more clear sound. I wonder what the guys in the 50s thought. Lots of folks used to use flatwounds, too. Now rounds really make up the vast majority of strings that folks use. Times change.
