I gotta work on the name.

It was a 2007 MIM Strat I picked up in trade maybe 5 years ago. I converted it to a double fat Strat with a pair of Tonerider AlNiCo 2 humbuckers. Each pickup is wired to it's own volume control - no tone controls. It gets into that EVH thing (bridge pickup) really well.

I never liked the scrawny neck. I sold that last week on Reverb (my first sale there).

This is a Warmoth Vortex neck. Maple with Ziricote fingerboard. '59 carve and SS6115 frets. I had it on that backwards Tele for a while until I decided to euthanize that guitar.

It's a bit hard to capture, but I glitter-painted the headstock.

I can't help myself. :-P

I’m seriously considering making this a SSS Strat. I have all the parts including a pickguard. I snagged a set of StewMac Golden Age Strat pickups with an overwound bridge pickup as they’re on sale right now. In fact, all the Golden Age pickups are on sale now.

This neck’s fit to this body is exceptional. No shim required.

This thing is a great playing guitar.

I have lots of different HH guitars. 7 to be exact (not counting this one). I only have 1 SSS Strat. It’s probably time for another.

WOW.

Wow.

That is beautiful. I like the look of the Grover Imperials on that headstock.

I was expecting a *Fender* Mustang...but it's a Fnord! :o)

Thank you sir!

Man, I love these tuners! They're the GFS knock-offs, but they are super nice. 16:1 and smoov as silk.

The headstock image does not fully depict the sparkle. I have yet to crack that photographic recipe.

Back in the '80s I had a '74 Mustang exactly like the one Cobain later made famous - blue with the racing stripe. I don't miss it. I have no nostalgic longings for that guitar. At all. (-:

Yer sick, man, just SICK!!! LOL...

I actually have a Warmoth neck with that headstock for my green "Super Strat" body; it's on there from time to time, but I find the trem/vibrato works better with a Strat style headstock and nut...

then...

I made a change.

I had the HH bases covered well but I only had one SSS Strat. So I decided to covert this one to SSS.

Earlier this month StewMac had a sale on Golden Age pickups. They were $20 off per pickup. That meant their Strat sets were $90 on sale.

The set I installed has an overwound bridge pickup (7.4k) and a slightly overwound neck (6.4k). The neck pickup is actually a bridge pickup from the vintage wound set. It's nice that StewMac lets a fella mix and match.

I also ordered the volume pot from them as they offer CTS with tighter tolerances. This one ohmed out at 244k. I used a 300k tone pot and a .1uF cap. I might go to a different cap in the future. I'll live with this for a while and see how I settle in with it.

This is one bold, stroppy sounding Strat through the Marshall. Spank-galore. It quacks hard. Definitely a different duck than the Fat 50s in my other Strat.

It's been many years since I've had a Strat with overwound pickups.

I love Golden Age pickups! I think the only ones I haven't tried are the P90s.

SSS

One more update...

The StewMac pickups are nice, but were not all that I had hoped. After playing this guitar for a week I decided I wanted just a bit more whack to the amp. I wanted an even bigger differentiation between this guitar and the Strat with the Fat '50s.

So I ordered a set of GFS grey bottoms - non-stagger poles - with an overwound bridge pickup. Like - 9.7 k overwound.

This is what I was aiming for! It's still "Strat." But it's a punch right between the eyes Strat tone. Great cleans and even better OD through the Marshall. This guitar is going to live on like this.

I played it and the Warmoth (Fat '50s) back to back last night through the Marshall. I completely love both Strats for what they bring. The Warmoth quacks better - which is no surprise. Of all the Strat pickups I've tried, nothing has quack like the Fat '50s.

One note about these GFS pickups. I had to swap the leads on the middle pickup at the switch/pot. When wired "correctly" it buzzed and was out of phase in positions 2&4. I seem to remember experiencing this (10?) years ago on a set of GFS grey-bottom pickups in a guitar that is now long gone. Apparently they never fixed it. But it was an easy fix and not worth the hassle of returning them.
