^ Agree. I thought that hand foul on Spain was incidental & not worthy of the PK which earned Russia the goal. Should have been ESP 1-0 RUS.

Croatia vs Denmark was a nail biter. Excellent goal keeping on both sides. Looking forward to Croatia slapping Russia.

Whilst I get irritated by the whining and acting to try to influence referees, I seem to remember from personal experience that it can be remarkably painful if a large man with metal studs on his boots stands on your ankle or kicks you on the knee.I`m enjoying this World Cup more than I expected to, but still prefer Rugby Union where, amongst other things, men are men. They may go off the field to get some stitches or have an arm reattached, but they are very likely to come back on again.

"Harry Kane is prostrate, and he's appealing..."

I think the ITV commentator could have phrased that better :-).

But it summed up the England v Colombia game. Every time Kane got the ball he ended up on the floor. The Colombians had obviously been instructed to play dirty to rattle England. Even the Colombian coach elbowed an English player on his way off the pitch at the break. But it backfired, Kane got a penalty from being brought down, and the Colombians eventually got what they deserved, which was to lose.

Ya. That England v Columbia game was ugly. Both sides played awful soccer. Terrible ball handing and passing. Most unenjoyable.

"Ya. That England v Columbia game was ugly. Both sides played awful soccer. Terrible ball handing and passing. Most unenjoyable."

It was expected that Columbia were going to attempt to intimidate the English players, but with one exception (Henderson ... the player who missed the penalty in the shoot out) they pretty much rode everything with little complaint. Harry Kane was fouled just about every time he was on the ball, but walked away from everything.

The referee (I think that he was from the USA?) did very well to keep some semblance of control, & was very patient with the Columbian players.

Had this game been played under a English Premier League referee & the way in which they handle PL games, then I doubt that Columbia would have finished with more than 8 players had they behaved as they did.

"unenjoyable" ... not at the end ... if you were English!!!

Columbia v. England was an ugly, but interesting, game.

I was surprised to see the entire Columbia team crowd around the ref after the quite correct penalty call early in the second half.

Seemed a bit aggressive and absurd. I was surprised the ref didn't just start handing out yellow cards to everyone encroaching him and be done with it.

The last minute Columbian equalizer was a special bit of added drama considering the match result.

"I was surprised to see the entire Columbia team crowd around the ref after the quite correct penalty call early in the second half."

In the English Premier League this is not allowed, & players doing it are shown a yellow card. The only player who is supposed to speak to the referee about a contested decision is the team captain. It does not appear that such instructions have been issued to referees in the WC.

Generally the WC referees appear to have been told to be "generous" to the players regarding some fouls ... & play acting (or perhaps they've not been given any guidance at all?) There have been plenty of incidents in many of the games that would have resulted in yellow - & red - cards in English league football, yet relatively few have been shown.

I guess that FIFA don't want to "spoil the show"?

Some fantastic play in this world cup.

I think Neymar's diving ended up costing Brasil in the end. Wish I could read Portuguese to read first hand the Brazilian perspective. Any other team likely would've been granted a penalty after Gabriel Jesus was taken down in the box, but due to Neymar's behavior earlier in the match (and tournament) it wasn't given. I'm not saying I disagree, I think it was a worthy statement by the ref and imo Neymar should've been yellow carded for cheating earlier.

The Russians made it farther than most thought, too bad their last bit of play was showing bad form in a shootout but Croatia deserved it imo.

So England through to the semis! I think they make the final and Belgium takes them out, but looking forward to seeing how it plays out.

That would be a certain kind of irony if Belgium, the seat of the European Parliament, knocked England out of the cup in this the year of Brexit. Part of me doesn't want England to win the cup because it will fuel the flames of the very worst of our national isolationist small-minded delusions of grandeur. But, come Wednesday night for the semi-final against Croatia, I'll be on the edge of the sofa with a beer in one hand shouting c'mon Engerlaand at the TV, as is my patriotic duty.

In about 30 minutes England vs Croatia to see who plays France for the title.

I like Croatia because that's where we got the Dalmation dog breed from. Without which firefighters would have to find a new mascot, like maybe a miniature pony.

Well. It was a good game. England are up there right now, but unfortunately the huge competitions aligned on national basis are every four years.

That could easily change to every two years.

They did really well, and may end up third.

England may have croaked in the end but Croatia got away with at least 4 fouls (by my count) that should have earned them yellow cards and one red card expulsion. Not my cup of tea; I prefer the "beautiful game."

Ah well. It's easy for me to criticise from my sofa, and pick apart where they could have done things differently, but on the whole they did well to get that far with the youngest squad in the tournament. It was enjoyable watching them all the way through the cup games, which hasn't always been the case. None of the sense of the sickening inevitability of early defeat. They did good.
