Thank God for guitars!

I have a Squier full-depth SSS routed body, bridge/trem, neck and tuners that I've un-razored the fret ends, cleaned up the neck pocket, and smoothed out the grainy feeling 'satin' finish on the neck. I was going to turn it into an HHH 'Superstrat' with GF Lil' Killers humbuckers, individually tappable and selectable via 3-way toggles. GF sells a solderless harness and pickguard just for this purpose. Well, they don't know how to select the right cap and pot taper for these pups (different thread). So I sent it all back. I have figured out I can make a custom pickguard out of nice wood veneer on thin copper or aluminum backing, using the CNC at our library (yes our library). I'm trying to think of what the most un-strat-ly configuration I could make out of this guitar. So I'm crowdsourcing FDP for ideas. Keep in mind, I'm in a total of $10 on this purchase so far (Paid $25 for the guitar complete with a gig bag and sold the Squier pups/guard to someone for $15 because it was a decent looking pearloid pickguard). Well, I did buy a Weller soldering iron, since I figured if GF can't get a pre-wired harness right, I might as well solder the whole thing up myself (soldering skills are intermediate).

I'm wondering if I could even somehow figure out how to do surface mount type pups in this thing with a little finesse, what kind of interesting tones I might be able to extract.

I'm open to ideas from others with a weird streak.

What's the most strange pups you've equipped the quintessentially cool strat body shape, and enjoyed the tone output? Semi-cheap as well!

I'm thinking P-90's, Filtertrons, gold-foil wannabes, whatever. Anything but traditional SCs.

Got sound samples of your evil genius?

Here's a weird one. I built a Tele-shaped guitar years ago that was fairly unconventional.

I routed a 10" circle into the face and placed the lid of a steel cookie tin in the recess. On top of that was a flat-foot archtop style bridge. Under the plate, with a small air gap, was a Duncan JB humbucker. The strings went over the bridge and anchored at a small tailpiece on the end of the body.

This six-string guitar was basically a banjo with a sheet-metal head.

The strings made the steel plate vibrate, and the pickup picked that up and sent signal to the amp. It sounded like a resonator, but it fed back like a banshee in heat :o)

Here's the thing about quirky instruments--which I've discovered over many years of wacky experimentation: they all end up in the back of a closet because they're really not that versatile. They do one or two things really well and the rest is pretty much unusable.

It's the simple ones that get taken to gigs because they are reliable and versatile.

Here's another wacky one I built that has a humbucker in the bridge and two Tele neck pickups. It's wired like a Strat, with a five-way switch, but with a single volume and tone like a Tele.

This abomination.

A couple of gold foils if you play slide. Youtube Joey Landreth or the Bros Landreth and hear his build. It sounds fantastic though I don't know whose pickps he has in it.

Peegoo: The Stingray looks sweet! Really like the controls on the side of the body. Really clever. I was thinking of putting a 5 position switch in a new cavity in the low e side of the upper bout since I can put my pickguard pretty much anywhere I feel like. Love the body shape, headstock shape and the angle of the pups matching the line of the upper body. Really nice. Looks kind of like something Backlund would design. No issue angling the HB in the bridge other than routing the hole big enough?

Cheers, RN. That bridge pickup is a drop-in replacement (Duncan Li'l 59) for a standard Telecaster rout.

If you wanted to mount it into a standard humbucker rout, you'd need to get out the router and make a bit more room in the body.

You can get totally nutty with a standard Strat as your starting point. Look here:

Not mine, but you get the idea.

I hauled out an old issue of Vintage Guitar tonight with a Jaguar on the front. Hmm. Maybe a Jagucaster? I will have to see if I can replicate the controls in some way. A coworker at a different location of my employer runs Ambrosonics on the side and makes this crazy rotary switch that gets one so many different combinations that might provide a way to do the Jaguar switch and tone combos .

Peegoo - your photo inspired me. I'm copying the pickup ideas as much as possible.
Today, I bought a used Tele neck pup. I plan to angle it like you did, buy another tele neck pup for middle position, angle, etc.

How does one accomplish the 'reverse wound' middle pup thing for 2&4 hum canceling, with two neck pups?

So, here's the idea riffing off of Peegoo's Stingray, with three tele neck pups (probably will buy cheapo ceramics and then replace the pole pieces with three different types of alnico pole pieces. I will not be leaving the control knobs where they are on a strat. I have a volume pedal if I need to swell. I'm thinking of moving them to the low E side of the pups with some additional routing and pickguard mods. Also thinking of three slider toggles for pickup selection. all of the controls will be in line with the pups in some way.

Stratiatele maybe?
