Looking for a "back-up" take out.. Tele for my grandson.
He has a an American Standard and a HiWay 1 but concerned about getting ripped off when he plays out.. A few close calls.
Any recommendations ?

Define "inexpensive".
As LRO mentioned, the Bullet Series are going to be the lowest price point from the Fender Family, but you can graduate upward from there the Squier range: Affinity; Deluxe; Classic Vibe; Contemporary (newest range) then of course there's the Standard.
FWIW, the Deluxe, CV and Contemporary all have full thickness bodies ala Fender and have very good stock pickups (alnico pole, not ceramic bar)
The Bullet & Affinity are a slightly thinner body and more than likely would require a pickup upgrade at least.
Hard to go wrong with any of the modern Squiers IMO. Some just require more "finessing" than others.

The Squier Classic Vibe Tele can be used as is and perform well - the one upgrade I did to mine was the tuners.
It's a great Tele for under $400, even less for a used one (I bought mine new for around $325 + tax a few years ago).

I just bought a Mex Std Tele in Artic White been blown out (UK Based) as they are been discontinued, was approx the same price as a high end Squier maybe worth looking into around your neck of the woods.

This one fits into your budget and the pickups might be good enough that they don't need an upgrade.
edit: There are some good instruments coming out of the Indonesian factories these days.

Thanks for the tips..
Were I to get the Squier Standard... I have a set of pick-ups that came out of my 2003 Hiway 1...
I swapped those out for some Bill Lawrence Keystones many years ago.
The finger board they are calling Indian Laurel is another species of rosewood. Looks good.
The Classic Vibe seems to be an appreciable upgrade in quality for the extra bucks.
I like the Black Guard look... though I do prefer rosewood boards .
I'll go to GC and see what they have. .though I prefer dealing with Sweetwater.. depends on the individual guitar and price at GC.
Perhaps someone locally has a used CV... I'll check.

You can pick up a Squier and have a good set up done. I have a couple of Squiers that play as good as my older, American made Teles.

I’ve got a friend who has a ‘58 or ‘59 Tele. He didn’t want to gig it any more so he had Don Mare wind a set of pickups to match those in that guitar. He installed the pickups in a top loading Squier of some sort.
You’d be hard-pressed to tell the guitars apart in a blind listen test.

Classic vibes are great. Ive played some amazing baja teles. Heck I still want one. What a great neck. The color is actually good too unlike other butterscotch fenders that look like Velveeta cheese.

I love my Baja Tele (the butterscotch w/ blackguard version). I sold my American Series Tele after getting the Baja because the is Baja "twangier." The Am Series Tele played great, but just didn't scream TELE when you played it like the Baja.

Another vote for the Baja, but they're not cheap.
Never played a classic vibe, but only heard good things about them.

Guess that is subjective. There isn't a guitar out there Fender or Squier that is cheap I would say, but I would say at well under a grand, it may fit some folks definition especially considering the standard non custom shop american vintage type guitars are now $2000. YMMV.
